Ime Udoka is finalizing a deal to become the new head coach of the Boston Celtics. Udoka spent the past season with the Nets.

He knows the players

Udoka had the opportunity to coach Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Marcus Smart in the world cup in 2019 with the Spurs coaching staff. The players spoke highly of him. He is also said to have an edge, something that the Celtics roster needs in a coach moving forward. The three players were consulted and had a say in the process.

NBA history

Udoka played professionally for 12 years and has coached since 2012. He won a championship with the Spurs in 2014. While Udoka does not have any prior head coaching experience, the Celtics hope his time as a player will help connect with the team, and propel them moving forward. Udoka as a coach is seen as a relationship builder and someone who emphasizes hard defensive play. Brad Stevens has high respect for the Spurs organization, and that factored into the hire.
