One of the biggest questions of the offseason has been a potential trade for Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports Russell Westbrook will be on the move tonight from the Wizards to the Lakers. But he reports that the deal is not entirely in place yet. The reason is that the Sacramento Kings are still trying to get a deal done with the Lakers. However, if the Wizards deal goes through, the Lakers will be sending Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to the Wizards.
But, the question is regarding the draft pick compensation is the biggest question at the moment. As Brad Turner reports, the question is what picks will be part of the deal. The presumption is the 22nd pick will go to the Wizards, but the second round is a possibility. Another thing to note is there is no report on a future pick as part of the trade.
So, at the moment, the Lakers pick status for tonight is in question if the trade is made tonight. If the first-round pick is in the trade, the Lakers will not pick in the draft tonight. But, this is barring that the Lakers will trade with another team to get a pick in the draft.
The other possible trade would not be complete until the start of the league year. Which Jake Fischer reports could be a multi-team deal. However, there is no news on what other parties have interest in a mega deal and what additional players are on the block.
What Impact does the Russell Westbrook Trade Have on the Wizards?
The major impact on the deal is what do the Wizards do with Bradley Beal. It seems surprising that the Wizards would not deal both stars in a deal for an accumulation of draft picks. Wojnarowski reports that the deal is done to bring more players to compensate Beal. Though the Wizards are dumping a lot of salary in sending Westbrook to LA, the question is with the remaining cap room they will have is who can they acquire in free agency. So, the money managing of the Wizards will be fun to watch in the coming days as free agency approaches.
