USA volleyball had to work hard for the latest win. Turkey gave the US women a huge challenge, but the Americans took the match three sets to two.
Turkey had been inconsistent in the tournament. This was the USA’s chance to capitalize. Turkey was able to run with the United States early. It was back and forth with the US hiding a slim lead. With a 15-12 lead, Turkey took a timeout. The timeout did not help at first as the lead grew to 18-13. Turkey caught up and closed the gap. The US again only had a two point lead in the set. The Americans expanded on that and won the set 25-19.
Turkey jumped out to a 4-1 lead. The US chipped away and took the lead 10-8 and went on a tear to make it 13-9. Turkey called a timeout to calm the waters. The set became contested again after the timeout but the US hit the gas pedal to separate. But Turkey roared back again to make it 21-18. The US quelled the comeback again and won the set 25-20.
Desperation set in for Turkey and they played like to start. Turkey had the plan to go for broke and jumped out to a 10-6 lead. The US needed timeout. After the lead grew to 15-10, coach Karch Kiraly called timeout again. He was fiery as a player, but as coach he is calm and collected. The Americans looked out of sorts. Kelsey Robinson got into a groove off the bench as the Americans tried to claw back, but Turkey took set three 25-17.
Momentum was still on the side of the Turks. Team USA seemed flat but stayed in it. A timeout was needed as Turkey got an ace serve to make it 8-4. Things didn’t get much better with a 15-9 score. The US called timeout again and Jordan Thompson got subbed out for Annie Drews. Thompson had been so reliable but was struggling. Drews had an ace and made a critical kill. Turkey called a timeout as the score became 18-15. Captain Jordan Larson got the kill fresh out of the timeout which added to the 4-0 run. Unfortunately, the US couldn’t keep the momentum going and started to fall apart again. Turkey took the set 25-20.
Haleigh Washington had some key blocks over the course of the match, the fifth set was no exception as she had two right of hop. Annie Drews had three kills to start the set as well. A 6-2 lead warranted a timeout from Turkey. Turkey answered with a 5-0 run. Tension mounted with the set tied at 10. Washington did it again and Turkey called a timeout as the US took a 13-11. The red while and blue pulled it out 15-12 and take the match 3-2. They are now 3-0 in pool play.
