Remember when Vitek Vanecek played for the Kraken? Yeah, me neither. Here is what happened in case you missed it. Vitek Vanecek was left unprotected from the Seattle Kraken in the expansion draft. The Kraken needed to take three goalies, so naturally since he was available, he was taken. The 25 year old has done a great job in his only year of NHL action with the Washington Capitals. It was surprising to see his name available for the draft.
The Kraken have not been shy about trading the players taken in the expansion draft. Ideally, some players were just drafted to check off a box for the expansion draft. The Kraken have actively been talking with players in free agency. When they agreed to terms with Philipp Grubauer, there were three starting goaltenders on the roster. So, Vanecek was sent back to the Capitals in exchange for a 2023 second round pick. The Kraken have opted to go with experience in net as opposed to youth, which is understandable.
Well, that is a really good question. Vanecek returns to Washington with the status of Ilya Samsonov in limbo. Samsonov was viewed as the top option at first. When he spent time in the COVID protocol, Vanecek came in, played very well, and then he became the top option. Samsonov is a free agent and he wants to play. He was given a qualifying offer by the Caps, no word on what his decision is yet. We will keep monitoring the situation and give you an update when we can.
