The Jacksonville Jaguars should be the favorite in the AFC South. I know, your probably thinking I’m crazy. But think about it. First of all, Indy is in shambles already because Wentz is hurt. Second, Houston is in a uncertain time with Watson. FInally, Tennessee is overrated. The Jacksonville Jaguars have put pieces in place to improve and if they can execute, they can be dangerous right away. Let’s break it down.
New Look Offense
Any offense that adds Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne instantly becomes better. Both were first round picks from Clemson. Lawrence is the quarterback Jacksonville has been waiting for. Etienne in an all around back. James Robinson carried the load for the team in 2020. He will still be involved. However, Etienne is now the top option. Now let’s talk receivers.
Could it be better? Yes, but this isn’t that bad. We’ve seen worse. DJ Chark as the top receiver is a questionable choice, at least for now. I’m not a big stats guy, but if he can start pumping out 1,000 yards or close to it from here on out, then he’s a top option. Marvin Jones coming over from the Lions was most likely a veteran presence pick up. Laviska Shenault is the really intriguing because of what he can do. But, watch out for Collin Johnson too. He got a good amount of time and has good speed. It’s to early to say if Jalen Camp, the seventh round pick from Georgia Tech, will be in the mix.
I’ll spare everyone and not talk about Tim Tebow, let’s just see what happens with him. Luke Farrell was taken from Ohio State in round five. Chris Manhertz is the starter right now, this position group may need to be evaluated more before making a fair assessment.
The offensive line could be better in terms of age. Cam Robinson and Jawaan Taylor are young tackles, that’s the good news. Left guard Andrew Norwell, center Brandon Linder, and right guard A.J Cann are 29. Walker Little was taken in round two from Stanford and is coming off an injury. He is a left tackle, but maybe will get converted to guard. With Urban Meyer as head coach, we can expect the signature Ohio State spread offense with a balanced attack to make it’s way to Duval.
Will The Defense Pounce?
There’s no question that on paper the defense looks better. Switching to a 3-4 will maximize the pass rush skills of Josh Allen and K’Lavon Chaisson at linebacker. Myles Jack and Joe Schobert will stay in the middle and rack up the tackles. Next up, the secondary. The Jaguars signed Shaquill Griffin from Seattle. This is huge. Pairing him with CJ Henderson makes up a good one two punch. The safety position is kind of an anomaly right now. Rayshawn Jenkins and Jarrod Wilson are both 27, and we don’t know that much about them. This is a secondary that is flying under the radar right now. In addition, the Jaguars drafted Georgia corner Tyson Campbell and Syracuse safety Andre Cisco in round three. Cisco is the backup to Wilson right now. Campbell may compete for the nickel spot.
Finally, the defensive line. Jacksonville, don’t get too excited about Malcolm Brown. He isn’t that bad, but better options were out there. It may be make or break time for Taven Bryan, and maybe pairing him with Roy-Robertson-Harris will help him out. The Jacksonville Jaguars can be successful this year and take the south by storm.
