Continuing on my series of best bets for awards, it is time for Coach of the Year. Coach of the Year is a relatively hard award to bet on as it involves more than just wins. A lot of the time, the winners’ team doesn’t have the best record, but makes the most of the talent on his roster. With that being said, here are some coaches to bet on based on the current odds.
Keep up with series here:
Buy Ron Rivera
The Washington Football Team were the outcasts of the playoffs last year. They made it in only because their division was terrible, going 7-9 and still winning the NFC East. They were written off instantly, not one person or analyst picked them to beat the Buccaneers. Even with all the hate, they came out there and competed their tails off, and gave the eventual Super Bowl champs a run for their money. This is a huge testament to Ron Rivera, and the hold he has on these players. They will run through a wall for their coach and they proved it when the stakes were the highest. Now, they have a new and improved roster, with additions including Ryan Fitzpatrick, Curtis Samuel and Jamin Davis. Add this talent onto the young core, and this team can easily hit double digit wins. Ron Rivera’s odds currently sit at +1800.
Buy Kyle Shanahan
The 49ers were a 4-12 team last year. Injuries decimated this team and their record plummeted below expectations from the previous Super Bowl losers. People tend to have a short memory when it comes to awards, and the record jump that could happen this year makes Shanahan a serious contender for this award. They have so many talented players coming back from injury. This roster is locked and loaded to not only push for the best division in football, but to make a deep playoff run. Buy Kyle Shanahan at +1300.
Fade Frank Reich
Frank Reich is seen as a favorite for this award, which I don’t get. The Colts were 11-5 last year, and the roster didn’t improve a lot. They replaced Philip Rivers with Carson Wentz, which is a downgrade. Not only that, Carson Wentz is probably out for the first few weeks of the season along with key offensive guard Quenton Nelson. The Colts should’ve been big buyers this offseason, they had the cap space and timeline to do it, but they didn’t make any huge signing. This team may be in for regression, and any decrease in wins will ruin Reich’s chances at Coach of the Year.
Buy Vic Fangio
If you know me at all, you know I’m obsessed with the Broncos this year. This defense is the second coming of the Legion of Boom, and can give any offense fits. Couple that with an offense that is steadily improving, and this team has a real shot at winning a lot of games. The Broncos went 5-11 last year, so there is a lot of room for improvement. This team feels like the 2018 Bears, when Matt Nagy won Coach of the Year. All this team needs is pretty good play from one of Drew Lock or Teddy Bridgewater, and they have a real chance at double digit wins. All this, and Vic Fangio’s odds sit at +2500. Count me in!
