The Friday FP2 session had more action to unfold where drivers lost control and crashed. Max Verstappen crashed at Turn 7, the place where Charles Leclerc went wide in the morning. Despite being into the barriers with the mediums on, he topped the timing sheet with the previous lap time at 1:44.47 under softs. His crash ended the hopes of other drivers as the session was stopped with few minutes remaining.

Where they stood?

With rains between the two sessions of Friday, there were damp patches on track. The fastest in FP1, Valtteri Bottas was first to come out of the pitlane. He was in second place with his teammate making a comeback from P18 to P3 in the afternoon. Alonso (P4) carried a live helmet camera showing driver’s-eye view to the fans. Aston Martin showed good pace with Lance (P6) and Vettel (P8). Daniel Ricciardo at P15 still doesn’t seem to be comfortable driving his McLaren.

Spinning, Crashing and more at FP2

Carlos Sainz Jr. had his lap time deleted early on in the session at Turn 9. Esteban Ocon carried his luck of his last win by not going into the barriers at Turn 14, near the same place where the Alpha Romeo of Giovinazzi crashed in 2020. Lewis Hamilton complained about his Mercedes having some vibrations whereas Gasly went off slightly at Sector 2 bringing out yellow flags for a moment.

A massive crash at the exit of Turn 6 saw the end of practice for Charles Leclerc. He lost control of his rear and couldn’t stop his Ferrari from going into the barriers. This halted the session which was resumed with ten minutes remaining only to be ended by Max’s crash later.

Red Bull extend their contract with Sergio Perez

The Mexican driver, Perez who joined Red Bull in this season has now a confirmed seat for the next year. Though this deal will make the Azerbaijan Grand Prix winner happy, the chance of Albon or Gasly getting a second chance to drive for Red Bull in 2022 has gone.

“I’m really happy to be continuing with a great team like Red Bull into the new era of Formula One and it’s a great opportunity for me. Everyone starts from zero next year with the new regulations, so my only goal is to go all the way to the top with Red Bull.”, he said.
