This sunday, all eyes of the MMA world will actually be on a boxing event when former YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul will be taking on former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. Jake Paul comes into this bout knowing that this is without a doubt going to be his toughest test yet. Woodley on the other hand is looking to get the taste of victory again after losing his last four fights in the UFC. Possibly looking for a little bit of revenge for his buddy Ben Askren, who Paul KO’d back in April of this year. It’s going to be a spectacle for sure, but make no mistake, Jake Paul is looking to knockout Tyron Woodley. And Tyron Woodley is looking to knockout Jake Paul. There is a lot of negative feelings surrounding this fight, but many who tune in might just find themselves pleasantly surprised.
Jake Paul’s journey.
Five years ago if you told of Jake Paul’s YouTube subscribers that he would be preparing for his 4th professional boxing match, chances are they would be utterly confused. This YouTube boxing thing that actually started with some YouTubers in the UK, has grown into something so much more. Jake Paul’s first fight came against another YouTuber by the name of Deji. This fight happened as the Co-main event in Manchester, England. A card in which the main event was between Jake’s older brother Logan and Deji’s older brother KSI. Jake Paul was victorious in this fight and according to him from then on, he got bit with the “boxing bug”. That fight was an amateur bout. His professional debut came against yet another YouTuber by the name of Aneson Gib. Gib was no match for Paul, losing in the first round.
Then after that came the viral knockout of former NBA player Nate Robinson. This landed him a fight with former Bellator and ONE FC welterweight champion Ben Askren. Askren, who was not known for his striking, was coming off a 1-2 record in the UFC. And even though Askren did not have the striking credentials, many expected him to defeat Paul. It only took 1:59 for Paul to prove those people wrong. Which brings us to where we are now. Jake Paul about to main event yet again, this time in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio.
Tyron Woodley’s opportunity
Tyron Woodley liberty going into this fight that Jake Paul’s previous opponents haven’t had. People are beginning to take Jake Paul serious as a boxer. Starting out, Paul was looked at like a joke. Now, many people are taking him so serious that they are actually predicting Paul to win this fight. Because of that, Woodley is now in a spot where a loss to Paul doesn’t actually look that bad. Sure it will hurt, but the narrative that it is “embarrassing” to lose to Jake Paul is slowly starting to fade. Is that narrative still present? Absolutely. However, it is a lot less now than it would have been before the Ben Askren fight. Now on the flip side. If Woodley is able to go out there and defeat Jake Paul, some of the negativity surrounding the end of his UFC tenure can be eliminated.
Make no mistake, even though Woodley is on a four fight skid, the man is still dangerous. The power is still there. It may not be what it once was, but it’s going to be the most Jake Paul has felt thus far. Jake Paul is 3-0 and has not taken really any damage in any of his fights. How is he going to react if Woodley connects. Chances are it will be power that he has never felt before. Maybe he will be able to take it. But we could be one Tyron Woodley overhand right from the Jake Paul story having a not so happy ending for the main character. We will find out on August 29th!
