JK Dobbins will officially not play this season due to a torn ACL. This is why you don’t play your studs in preseason folks. JK Dobbins was going to be the lead back for the best rushing attack in football. Now, others will have to step up in his place. What can the Ravens do? This loss makes their offense more predictable.
Gus Edwards will now become the lead back. He offers just as much downhill running ability. Edwards however can not play in space like Dobbins can. He has no real agility, and he isn’t the same threat out of the backfield. The Ravens do have Justice Hill, think of him like a James White type roll. He’s faster than White and can also contribute to the run game. He has not gotten much use. Hill is the textbook definition of a change of pace back and can be used just like Dobbins. Todd Gurley is a free agent right now, but the Ravens are not interested in him at this time.
Trace McSorley is a backup quarterback on the roster. Penn State fans remember him well. I have mentioned before trying to using him as a slot receiver and punt returner. His speed is amazing. He could also be a candidate to become an all around offensive player. Think of Taysom Hill, only ten times faster and not as strong/big. It’s pretty clear he won’t get in as a QB anytime soon. Tyler Huntley balled out for them in their last preseason game throwing for 299 yards. This is a guy wo was undrafted from Utah not that long ago.
McSolrey needs to make a change or he will be out of the league. Picture this – Lamar Jackson in the backfield with Edwards, Hill, and McSolrey in a shotgun full house style formation. Good luck finding out whose getting the ball, and if your wrong, McSolrey or Hill can turn on the acceleration and burn the defense. Same situation with those two players flanking Jackson in a two back look. Adding some extra dimension to the offense could make it completely unpredictable. The problem is that the Ravens won’t do that, and that will make the loss of Dobbins loom even larger.
