The Wait is OVER!!!
Fantasy Football is back, football is back, and what a wild time it is! Every year millions and millions of us get to play general manager of our own fictional NFL team and draft, sign, and trade players. Trading, in particular, has been my favorite fantasy football hobby. I trade a lot, too much according to my league mates.
Last year I set our league record with 20 trades in a season. Now this isn’t a dynasty league, this is redraft, and I traded 20 times. One might say I have a problem, but I can stop whenever I want, I just don’t want to.
Now, trading can accomplish a few things. You can sell a player who’s letting your team down and get depth. Or, you can package some talent for stud talent. maybe you even swap bench players because you have a clever team name in mind and want to have it.
But then, then there is the purest trade you can make. The one you make because of a simple reason. You believe in the guy. Analysts and rankings get left behind because this is a part of your soul. This is the hill you are willing to die on. This is your endgame.
I have a few guys like that this year, and I am happy to share them with you! These are the guys who once I have them, they aren’t moving. I will hitch my entire season to them. I have never been one to say the word “untouchable” but these 3 are creeping into that tier for me.
Fantasy Football’s Next Elite!
#1) Antonio Gibson RB-Washington Football Team ADP: 2.02 (15th overall)
My Twitter feed is basically a love note to Antonio Gibson this fantasy football season. With Ron Rivera saying he wants him more involved in the passing game and Kyle Allen dropping the “CMC role” quote my love for Gibson only grew. Now, I will say I have loved him since last season. I am high on him, so high in fact, that in my season projections article he came in at RB5. I love the talent, I love the situation, and I love the opportunity to explode. Playing in a division with the Eagles, Cowboys, and Giants, only makes me like him more. As a rookie last year he averaged 4.7 yards per carry (per ESPN). No matter how high guys like Matthew Berry are on him, it’s not enough, rank him as a top back this year, get him at his bargain position, and don’t tilt. Don’t move him. Hold the line and run wild with one of the best young backs in the game!
Pittsburgh’s #1 Fantasy Receiver
#2) Diontae Johnson WR-Pittsburgh Steelers ADP: 5.01 (50th overall)
Diontae Johnson, what can I say about him? Well, a lot, but let me allow the stats to speak for themselves for a moment. When he played a full game, he did that 12 times last year including playoffs, he was targeted over 12 times a game. Extrapolate that out to a full 17 game season and you have a fantasy football WR1. Taking into account his 64% catch rate he would have 204 targets and 130 receptions. That is ridiculous. Absolutely, unequivocally, irrefutably, ridiculous. Take him in the 4th round when people are busy with Amari Cooper or something, and laugh all the way to the bank. Oh, and the people that will tell you “he drops too many passes” read them this list of drops leaders in the past. Roy Williams, James Jones, Mike Williams (Tampa Bay), DeSean Jackson, Brandon Gibson, Terrell Owens, Donald Driver, Randy Moss, Dwayne Bowe, Brandon Marshall. This was the list of players who dropped the most catchable balls from 2009-2012. Some of them are busts, but TO, Randy Moss, and Brandon Marshall aren’t exactly slouches. Draft him with confidence.
TB12’s Best Fantasy Football Friend
#3 Chris Godwin WR-Tampa Bay Buccaneers ADP: 4.09 (47th overall)
Tom Brady’s best weapon is a receiver who runs clean routes, has good hands, and gets yards after catch. Those three attributes apply to Chris Godwin better than just about anyone else in the league in my humble opinion. Built to run and bully, Godwin is a guy who was the #2 WR two years ago. Now people forget about him until the 4th round? Nope. Not me. I will draft him early in the 4th or late 3rd and ride him to glory. Last year the man played through an injury and for some reason people just faded him hard this year. Watch the preseason, he was the best receiver in Tampa. Brady is going to feed him, expect a near 100 catch season from Godwin.
