The Seattle Seahawks are making a surprising trade, one week before the season starts. Ahkello Witherspoon was one of the major additions the Seahawks made this off-season. Over the last few days, however, the Seahawks have brought in two Cornerbacks, Sidney Jones and Nigel Warrior.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the Seahawks have traded cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to the Steelers for a fifth-round draft pick in 2023.
The Seahawks did not seem to be impressed by the veteran cornerback. When he was signed this off-season he was projected to be the starting left CB. However, that will no longer be the case, as the Seahawks will now choose from DJ Reed, Tre Flowers, Jones and Warrior for both spots.
Appearing in 66 snaps in the preseason, the University of Colorado alum surrendered three receptions on eight targets for 53 yards. A large chunk of that came on a 35-yard catch-and-run by Broncos receiver Jerry Jeudy in the second week of the preseason. While it was clear as to why he lost his grip on the starting job, the exit of Ahkello Witherspoon from the Pacific Northwest is still a curious one. Even with Reed and Flowers now seemingly at the top of the depth chart, there’s still a great deal of uncertainty in that group. But the Seahawks have made their stance clear and felt it was best to move on without one of their more noteworthy free-agent acquisitions this year.
With this trade, the seahawks have freed up some cap space, giving them $8.6 million total.
Explanation For The Trade
The Seahawks still have to clear some space to extend the contracts of both starting Left Tackle Duane Brown, and Safety Quandre Diggs. With an extra 1.5 million now, it seems likely that the Seahawks maybe progressing towards an extension on one of the two.
Meanwhile, the Steelers need another starting cornerback.
