NFL: Patrick Mahomes Isn’t the Next GOAT, He Isn’t Even the Greatest of Right Now

Patrick Mahomes

This Patrick Mahomes argument has to end, it just doesn’t make sense anymore.  It barely made sense before last season.  Patrick Mahomes is not a threat for the GOAT title, mainly because he isn’t even the best QB in the league right now.

Before the pitchforks get sharpened and the torches get lit, let me explain.  Yes, Mahomes is an excellent thrower of the football.  However, you’ll notice I called him a thrower and not a passer.  NFL history is filled with legendary QBs who weren’t great passers, but could sling the ball all over the place.  They had great success, much like Mahomes has.

Players like Brett Favre, Ben Roethlisberger, and Terry Bradshaw were and are considered excellent quarterbacks, two are enshrined in the Hall of Fame.  This is the company I believe Mahomes belongs in.  When I think of the greatest of all time, the answer is easy, it’s Tom Brady.  I follow him up with Peyton Manning and then it’s a bit of a logjam after that.  If you want to say Montana is next, I won’t argue.

The players like Mahomes aren’t anticipatory throwers.  They are the ones who see a guy come open and have the bazooka arm to get it there in a second.  However, picking apart a defense over and over was never their style.  Instead, they opt for the big chunk plays and rely on their arm strength rather than accuracy.

Even last season, Mahomes only completed 66% of his passes which ranked him 16th in the league.  The man is a human highlight reel, but that doesn’t make him the best.

I’ll say it again, Patrick Mahomes is not a threat for the GOAT title, mainly because he isn’t even the best QB in the league right now.  That honor, in my opinion, still belongs to Tom Brady.  What more does the guy have to do?  His accuracy and arm strength haven’t budged an inch.  He is still the best at reading the defense.  TB12 is being overlooked, mainly, because people are kind of sick of him.

Patrick Mahomes had a chance to take the throne.  A few years after Tom Brady bounced him from the playoffs the time came when Mahomes was going to finally usurp Brady as the king of the NFL.  The result? A 31-9 thrashing at the hands of Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  The GOAT wasn’t ready to relinquish his throne.  Brady dispatched Brees and Rodgers on his way to his 8th title.  Both games on the road.

Patrick Mahomes hasn’t done enough to warrant the best in the league title he seems to be handed.  Why is he considered so much better than guys like Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen?  Why is Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers being overlooked?

Listen, Mahomes is so much fun to watch you can’t help but root for the guy.  However, being a fun guy to watch doesn’t mean you are the best.  If I have to name my top 5 in the NFL right now I would rank it as: Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, and then probably Russell Wilson.  I know having Lamar up there is a bit controversial, but what he does with his running ability is unreal.

Mahomes also has the benefit of elite talent around him.  He has had one of the best lines in the game for a while and his duo of Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce are outstanding.  Again, I put him as the 4th best QB in the league, he isn’t bad, he just isn’t the best.

Until he shows that he is unequivocally the best, the GOAT talks need to stop.  Until he shows he can dissect the game like Brady and Manning did before him, or until he racks up 8 Super Bowls, or until he ends multiple dynasties including his own former team like Brady did to New England, Mahomes isn’t a GOAT candidate.  He is very, very good and maybe even great, but he is not the best.

Until Next Time
