With Jalen Richard starting the season on short-term IR, the Las Vegas Raiders needed to add another running back. So the Raiders signed running back Peyton Barber off the Washington Football Team’s practice squad.
The Raiders could make this by converting $12 million of Yannick Ngakoue‘s salary into a signing bonus, bringing his 2021 salary to $1 million. In addition, Nick Kwiatkoski converted $2.885 million of his salary into a signing bonus and he will make $990,000 in base salary this year.
Barber is in his sixth season. Last season Barber rushed 258 yards with two touchdowns. In 2018, Barber had his best season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when he rushed for 871 yards and five touchdowns. He also caught 20 passes for 92 yards and one touchdown in that same season.
Although his carries will be limited with Josh Jacobs and Kenyan Drake on the roster, Barber could see some snaps as a third-down back. Barber is a capable receiver out of the backfield and is good in pass protection, which is what head coach Jon Gruden loves in his running backs. Peyton Barber also gives the Raiders another short-yardage and goal-line option; he thrived in those situations last year with Washington.
In five seasons, Barber has rushed 2,245 yards for 19 touchdowns. Also, he caught 61 passes for 361 yards and two touchdowns. Barber is the perfect back behind Jacobs and Drake. He can catch out of the backfield and pass protect. This running back can get the tough yards when needed. Barber can also play special teams on the Raiders.
Richard is supposed to be back sometime this season. It will be interesting to see how well Barber plays when he is on the field. If Barber plays well, the Raiders will have a tough decision to make either keep Barber or activate Richard.
