The AMA has announced that Team USA will skip out on this years Motocross of Nations race. The race takes place later this month on September 26th. Italy is where this years race will take place. Due to Covid-19, Motocross of nations did not occur in 2020. That along with the fact that many riders may be potentially on the move, the AMA made a smart decision. Riders like Eli Tomac, who has represented Team USA in the past, who is on the move from Kawasaki to Yamaha. Along with countless others, there was just going to be a lot of American riders trying to get business done so that they can start to prep for the 2022 Monster Energy Supercross season.
Motocross of Nations is an event that Team USA used to dominate. It was a forgone conclusion a lot of years that Team USA would come out victorious. Names like Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart, Ryan Dungey, Ryan Villopoto, etc. the talent level was clearly higher in the US. And before then, guys like Damon Bradshaw, Jeff Ward, and Rick Johnson were better than the Europeans by an even bigger margin. However over the years as MXGP has become more competitive in Europe, the europeans have really started to hand it to the Americans. The Netherlands won the most recent in 2019 on home soil. Prior to that the French had won five straight Motocross of Nations. And in those years that Team USA was not winning, they really never threatened to win.
Motocross Losing Significance
In all honesty it may be a good thing for Team USA to skip out this year. The struggles at the event have not seemed to get any better as of late. A lot of that has to do with how big supercross is here in the US. Over in Europe the only championship is MXGP, a motocross championship. Here in the US, we have supercross and motocross. However, supercross is where the money is. Teams and riders do not treat motocross with the same importance. Any rider who has done both supercross and motocross in the US and MXGP in Europe, they will tell you the MXGP is much better. It is much more spread out in Europe. Riders do not have to race every weekend. It is not two separate seasons like it is here. Riders are simply tired come time for Motocross of Nations.
So although Team USA will not be competing, it could be for the better. However for guys like Marvin Musquin competing here in the US, he’s got just a few short weeks to go. The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross season is almost over and Motocross of Nations is right after that. Musquin will represent team France. And with some weeks to go, there could still be some others that get selected to represent their country this year.
