CSM top 5

With 3 days left until the first kickoff of the 2021 NFL season, I have been asking the football writers here at CSM for their top 5 Running Backs in the League coming into the year. It was not even close. There are 5 that stand out above the rest of the others in the NFL, to the writers here, that is. We ranked these players on a points system, meaning a 1st place vote got 5 points, 2nd got 4 points, and so on. Here is our CSM Top 5: Running Backs edition:

5. Nick Chubb: 33 Points

Nick Chubb ran behind one of the best lines in the league last season, and will do so again this season. He will most likely continue to split reps with Kareem Hunt, which is probably why he is at number 5. Heres what the CSM Experts have to say.

Most talented runner In the league for me. Vision, balance, with good size and speed. Cray efficient.

Joe Hendry

My guy. He has some of the best vision in the league and top 5 speed to go with it while being a bowling ball. He’s able to bounce off defenders or cut through them. He’s my dark horse to be the #1 RB in fantasy this year

C.M. Steven

4. Dalvin Cook: 43 Points

Cook kind of flew under my radar for most of last season, just because he is on a team that is still trying to not lose games they should win. But Cook is for sure a top running back in the league. Don’t take it from me, take it from the fans.

Dalvin Cook is a straight up beast, one of the fastest running backs in the NFL. If he can stay healthy this season, he will be a top tier RB, if not the best he’ll be top 3

Dacota Haynes

As a Packers fan I know far too well what Cook is capable of. Incredibly quick, can make guys miss, great downfield speed, and has broken far too many tackles from our below average middle linebackers.

Adam Van Oort

He’s coming off the best season of his career and the entire season was a steady incline. I see no reason why that stops this season.

Michael Wilson

3. Alvin Kamara: 44 Points

The best player on the Saints hands down, Kamara finds himself as the RB3 on the CSM roster. He is one of the most efficient and consistent players on the field when there is not a mobile QB under center. Luckily, the Saints went with Winston over Hill. Thoughts on Kamara are below.

Alvin Kamara is efficiency personified. Never one to get top level touches, the quality of his touches is what makes Kamara worth every dime the Saints pay him. Speed and shifty-ness allows Kamara to make huge plays out of seemingly dead ones. His pass catching ability is second to none, vision is elite, and he has surprising power. Kamara has earned every accolade given to him.

Steven Lawson

2. Christian McCaffrey: 65 Points

There is a lot of hype around CMC, and he deserves all of it. Although he was sidelined most of this season, he is poised for a major comeback. Here are some of the thought behind his placement from voters.

The true PPR king, Christian McCaffery has shown there is no facet of the game he won’t excel in. At the peak of his powers his receiving alone would have ranked him in the top 15 of running backs, add in a tremendous rushing ability and you have a back that averages 23+ touches per game with well over 20 ppg on average. The most dominant fantasy running back since LaDainian Tomlinson, Run CMC is the true king of the backfield.

Steven Lawson

CMC is powerful, difficult to bring down. He’s an excellent receiver out of the backfield. He blocks extremely well. His football IQ is extremely high.

Ben P

Honorable Mentions

There was actually a lot of different RB’s on this list, most of whom got only 5th place votes. Some of these include Jonathan Taylor(4), Antonio Gibson(4), and Ronald Jones(1).

Derrick Henry: 81 Points

I don’t know why I keep writing a number one for these positions. We all know that Mahomes is the QB1 and we all know Henry is the RB1. it isn’t even close as you all can see. Here is what a few of the writers had to say about him:

He’s powerful and very difficult to bring down. His vision is excellent. He’s patient. And he can cut sharply to get upfield. He’s not the quickest back in the NFL but his running skills are tremendous, an excellent combination of all those skills.
