Gophers running back Mohamed Ibrahim, suffered a season ending achilles injury, in Minnesota’s 45-31 loss to Ohio State on Thursday. Ibrahim finished the game with 163 rushing yards, on 30 carries, with 2 touchdowns. this loss is detrimental not only to the Gophers backfield, but too Minnesota as a whole. Minnesota head coach PJ Fleck made a statement on Mo’s injury, “There is no replacing Mohamed Ibrahim, he’s a special, special player.” Ibrahim has been with Minnesota through it all in recent years, including heroic performances in bowl games, and through the painful heartbreaking losses in the program’s recent history. Mo has ammassed for just over 3,000 rushing yards in 4 years with the Gophers, which ranks 8th all-time in the program’s history.
Like I said earlier in this article, this is a HUGE loss for the Gophers, as Ibrahim was ranked 4th on BTN”s Top 30 players for 2021. Minnesota will now have to turn to fellow underclassmen, Treyson Potts, and Cam Wiley. Redshirt Junior Bryce Williams could also become a third option for Minnesota. For Ibrahim and his future, he technically still has one more year of college eligibility left, if he decides to apply for a medical hardship waiver. But if he chooses the other route and decides to go pro, it wouldn’t be a bad idea for him. As of right now he is looking to be a surefire 4th or later round pick, in the 2022 NFL Draft.
What does this mean for the rest of the Gopher’s season?
As much devastating as it sounds, this unfortunate event doesn’t necessarily mean that Minnesota’s season is over. Yes it is huge blow to the Gophers not only on paper, but also his veteran presence will be missed in the locker room as well. Teammates described Mo as a leader, and a huge boost to the team’s morale. But this is where other stars on the roster can fill in his void. Some names include Redshirt Senior QB, Tanner Morgan, and another Redshirt Senior WR Chris Autman-Bell. Both know HC PJ Fleck’s offense very well, and will look to lead the Gophers to a winning season, yet even better, Go bowling.
