This morning, Bleacher Report has reported that Jimmy Garoppolo will be the San Francisco 49ers’ starting Quarterback. As many expected, Jimmy G will be the man to lead the team in the opening Matchweek this Sunday. Here’s what was reported by Bleacher Report:

“While head coach Kyle Shanahan has not officially announced who his starter will be, ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio reported that the expectation is it will be Garoppolo ahead of rookie first-round pick Trey Lance. Florio noted that the depth chart solidifies the notion that Jimmy G will start and take part in the midweek press conference rather than Lance.”

Was This The Right Call?

After this report came out, many have been wondering if sticking to Jimmy Garoppolo was the right call. This is due to the fact that Jimmy G has only played one full season in the past three years. According to BleacherReport, Garoppolo has missed a total of 23 games in the past 3 years due to his torn ACL and ankle injuries.Due to this recurrence, many believe that the former Patriots QB is too injury prone to be the starting quarterback.

Additionally, this report received criticism as many believed Trey Lance should be the starting Quarterback. The rookie showed moments of brilliance by throwing 276 yards and three touchdowns in the preseason. In the same Bleacher Report article, Mike Florio believed that Lance’s attributes could’ve tipped him to be the starting quarterback against the Lions.

“Lance is still green as a passer and has plenty of developing to do, but there was some thought that the former North Dakota State standout could start right away due to his running ability.”

Why This Is Garoppolo’s Last Chance

It is fair to say that this is Jimmy Garoppolo’s last chance to solidify himself as a top quarterback. Although he helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl in his only full season, Garoppolo has been labeled as injury prone. He’s a $24.2m salary-based player who’s only completed one season and fans aren’t happy about that.

Kyle Shanahan made it clear in the offseason that he will not give Garoppolo many more chances as John Lynch and him traded picks to draft Trey Lance. Lance is an exciting quarterback prospect who has a good running ability. If Jimmy G is not able to stay healthy, Shanahan will not hesitate to turn to Lance. Nevertheless, doing this could benefit the niners as San Francisco is known for their running game. Only time will tell if Garoppolo is the guy to lead the 49ers to Super Bowl glory once again.
