After signing a multi-year contract with Alfa Romeo this weekend, Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas took pole position in Monza on Friday’s qualifying. His teammate, Lewis Hamilton took P2 with Max queuing up in third. Despite both the McLarens putting up the best qualifying of this season coming P4 (Lando Norris) and P5 (Daniel Ricciardo), Giovinazzi shocked the fans today with his performance.

Q1: Russell qualifies with Yuki’s lap time deletion at Turn 11

The first qualifying saw the Ferraris coming out first with Leclerc soon having engine issues. Lap times were deleted which proved frustrating for Yuki as his attempt to make it into Q2 failed. On the other hand, it gave George Russell a chance to qualify. Looked like a cherry over the seat that he’ll get from the next season, driving for Mercedes. Mick Schumacher out qualified Mazepin and Robert Kubica who is replacing Kimi after he tested positive for Covid-19 last weekend. The last minute saw 16 cars on track creating a lot of traffic. The knocked out were Latifi, Tsunoda, Schumacher, Kubica and Mazepin.

Q2: Chaos in the pitlane of Monza

After setting a lap time, Perez found asked for a tow over the team radio. The decision of sending out drivers added again but this time it came with a cost. Both Aston Martin and Alpine were fined €5,000. Aston Martin for an unsafe release of Vettel into the path of car no. 44 of Hamilton, Alpine for Ocon’s “team member in the pit lane operating in an unsafe manner”. The knocked out were both the fined teams and Russell in P15.

Q3: Bottas and his banger lap

Both the previous sessions had Hamilton on the top but Bottas pulled off the fastest lap in Q3. Last weekend’s winner, Max Verstappen took P3 with his teammate, Sergio Perez securing a disappointing 9th. Pierre Gasly who won at the same track last year continued to impress the fans with his performance. Carlos will start tomorrow at P7 with Charles a place behind at P8. Antonio Giovinazzi came out at the very end and only managed to set one lap time, getting him P10.
