Cleveland Browns at Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday, September 12 at 3:25 pm CT. The last time the two teams met was in 2020 in the divisional round of the playoffs. As most of you know the Kansas City Chiefs did win that game, 22 to 17. Will the Chiefs start the season off strong or fall the Cleveland Browns?
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs had a great 2020-2021 season. They went to the Superbowl and even though it was a disappointing finish for them. The Chiefs have many returning players like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Patrick Mahomes had 4,740 yards last season and had 38 passing touchdowns. Travis Kelce was second in receiving yards last season with 1,416 yards. Tyreek Hill had 1,276 receiving yards which was still in the top 8 last season. Clyde Edwards-Helaire was a rookie last season and had 803 rushing yards and missed several games which probably would have pushed him over the 1,000-yards mark.
The Chiefs need to be able to score especially with the talent not only they have but the Browns have as while. Scoring 22 will more than likely not be enough in this game. If the Chiefs offensive line can hold up this year then Mahomes and Edwards-Helaire will both have great games. The Chiefs need to continue what they have been doing the last several years. Their defense also must be able to control the game and make Baker Mayfield get out of the pocket often.
The Cleveland Browns had a pretty good 2020-2021 season. Just like the Chiefs, they have many players returning like Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb, and Jarvis Landry. Baker Mayfield had 3,563 passing yards last season which is not the best out of all the quarterbacks but has made great strides each year. Nick Chubb had a 1,000-yard rushing season last year with 1,067 yards which is good if a running back breaks 1,000 yards. The receiving leader on the Browns was Jarvis Landry with having 840 yards which are not that great. With Mayfield getting better each year, we could see that number go up.
The Browns need to be able to get to Mahomes on defense. They also must be able to cover Hill and Kelce both. If they can do that for at least some of the game, then it will be a close one. On offense, they need to score and keep scoring if they want to outscore the Chiefs. Mayfield must control the game and not make dumb plays.
The Chiefs vs Browns will be a great start for the season. It will show us all how the season for both teams will be. The Chiefs need to show that they can stay great and hopefully make it back to the Superbowl. The Browns need to show that they are going to be a great team this year.
My prediction: Chiefs win 35 to 24
