Week 1 Boom Candidates
Indianapolis Colts QB, Carson Wentz vs SEA
Wentz is a polarizing player. By no means his personality, just his play/injury history. The matchup he gets this first week is perfect to gauge his season potential. Seahawks are a middle of the pack defense overall with a softer side for the QB. Even with T.Y. Hilton out, Carson has plenty of weapons to exceed expectations and perform as a top 12 QB this week.
Cleveland Browns RB, Kareem Hunt @ KC
This is one of the games I am most excited to watch this week. The Browns are a dark horse pick for some this year. With Kareem Hunt you know what you are going to get. Having that 3rd down role on lock down against a team that is going to be putting up the points works in his favor. I really don’t like making choices based on game flow, especially in week one, however Hunt is too enticing to pass up on this week. I am thinking he is a mid RB2 this week.
Tennessee Titans WR, Julio Jones vs ARI
Julio does not have to be the head honcho at WR anymore. That being said, by no means is he a second fiddle. A.J. Brown is the clear 1-A. This game also proves to have a good amount of offensive snaps. If Corey Davis could resurrect his career with Tannehill, Julio should be writing some magnificent chapters towards the end of his career. This game could have 3 top 12 WRs this week and I see Julio being the third to sneak in.
Washington Football Team TE, Logan Thomas vs LAC
My selection for Thomas here is not a knock on the LAC defense. This is more thinking Ryan Fitzpatrick is going to be slinging the ball as he is so well versed in doing. Thomas being the towering presence in that WR core is what makes him a boom candidate for me. Odds are if you drafted him you are playing him as the TE position is not a bountiful basket. With Fitzmagic always seeming to be strongest in the early part of the season, he could sneak into the top 6 of TE this week.
Week 1 Bust Candidates
Los Angeles Chargers QB, Justin Herbert @ WAS
Last year’s breakout darling is primed to have a massive year. Those expectations are warranted. With those expectations being set, this week will prove to be an under performance of those. I may like the Football Team’s defense too much. That’s the fun of week 1 prognosticating. Take some big swings. This one is mine. Even so, I am only seeing Herbert at the low-end of the starting tier with a chance of falling outside of the top 12 this week.
Seattle Seahawks RB, Chris Carson @ IND
The last couple years Chris Carson has made week 1 one of his best performances. That may have been because of the front lines he was playing (2020 ATL and 2019 CIN). This Indy defense is a bit different. Darius Leonard could be feasting throughout this game. I’m seeing Carson more in the back of the RB2 discussion this week.
San Francisco WR, Brandon Aiyuk @ DET
Brandon Aiyuk is one of the new fantasy WR darlings. His second half of the season production was massive even with a couple games missed. Obviously this had a lot to do with the 49ers ultra elite TE George Kittle being out. With Kittle back I still think Aiyuk has the ability to be special. This game however, will be a day for the running backs. He always has the skill to make that one incredible play to make any fantasy owner proud. I am expecting a back-end WR2 production.
Miami Dolphins TE, Mike Gesicki @ NE
All the shiny new toys in Miami are too interesting to ignore. Mike Gesicki, not brand new but still fun, is one of those. However, New England’s defense is ever so impressive and even more so on tight ends (3 TDs for tight ends last season). With this position being so TD dependent and all the new toys to spread the wealth, I don’t see Gesicki having one of his PPR field days. Unfortunately this could be a week outside the TE1 rankings for ole Mikey G.
