The Seattle Mariners last couple of weeks have not been the best, they have gone 4 and 6 in their last 10 games. This has made making the playoffs especially the Wild Card a hard task. When you have teams like Boston going 6 and 4 in their last 10 games and Toronto going 7 and 3 in their last 10 games, that just makes the chance of the Mariners making the playoffs much more difficult. However, it does not mean that the next couple of years will not be great in Seattle.
Free agency is going to be the key for many teams this offseason especially the Mariners. If the Mariners want to make a stronger push for the postseason next year then, they have to be able to get players through free agency and in the trade market. The biggest player that they should push for is Max Scherzer.
According to an article by Brandon Gustafson on 710am ESPN Seattle, “Scherzer is, of course, one of the game’s premier pitchers despite being 37 years old. He’s an eight-time All-Star and three-time Cy Young Award winner who may be winning his fourth this offseason. Scherzer won a World Series ring with the Washington Nationals in 2019 and was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline this year. He has a 2.17 ERA and 14-4 record with 219 strikeouts in 162 innings in 2021”. With a dominating pitcher like Scherzer, the Mariners will be able to make a strong push for the postseason and may be able to win the whole division. Therefore, adding a player like him to an already decent lineup would push them above and beyond.
Seattle Mariners Options
A big arm would be the best thing for the Mariners to get this offseason. However, also getting another big hitter would help them out. Many players could add just what they need this offseason. According to an article by Brandon Gustafson on 710am ESPN Seattle, “(Marcus) Semien and Scherzer, Kris Bryant and Scherzer, Bryant and Semien and Greinke,” Passan said. “To me, this is the time where the Mariners have to go out and put it all on the table”. Adding any one of these players would hopefully help them leap into the Wild Card. If they could get more than one, we could be seeing them winning the division.
The Mariners have many choices this offseason that could make them one of the best teams in baseball. Like Jeff Passon said, “they must put it all out on the table”. However, the Mariners will need to figure out what they want and what they really can afford. It will be nice to see them make the best choice and to have the best team they can have. They can do all that if they can make a huge push for any of the great players. Will they make the right choice? or will they not go for anyone they need?
