Zdeno Chara is returning to where it all began, the New York Islanders. The contract is for one year. We do not know the length at this time as this is breaking news. It is possible that it is only for the veteran minimum. Zdeno Chara was a 1996 pick of the Islanders as a defenseman. He has also spent time with the Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins, and Washington Capitals. He was the Captain of the Bruins from 2006 to 2020 and helped them win the Stanley Cup in 2011.
The 44 year old from Slovakia is not ready to retire yet but wanted to stay close to his family, who remain in Boston. Florida and St. Louis were also interested. Chara has opted to stay close to his family which is why he declined going to the Blues. We will have more information on this when it becomes available.
