What a week it has been for Jesse Lingard. In just a span of das, the English midfielder went from being the most hated man in Manchester to a club hero.
Here’s a quick recap of Jesse Lingard’s week:
Champions League Villain in ‘Fergie Time’
Manchester United opened up the 2021-21 season of the UEFA Champions League with an away game to BSC Young Boys. The ‘Red Devils’ had previously played the Swiss champions in the 2018-19 Champions League and won both games 0-3 and 1-0.
Cristiano Ronaldo opened the score early on and United had a comfortable lead until they went one man down in the first half. From that moment, the opposing team dominated the game in where they managed to level things in the 66′ minute.
Everything seemed to be pointing towards a draw, until Jesse Lingard came to the rescue…. for Young Boys. In the dying moments of the game, Lingard made a pass back that landed right to the Young Boys striker. The opposing player took advantage of the gift and made it 2-1.
Redemption For Lingard
Fast forward to this Sunday morning, Manchester United went away to West Ham United. In contrast to Tuesday, Ole’s men went down 1-0 in the first half after Said Benrahma’s shot was deflected by a defender. This first half goal was canceled out5 minutes later after Cristiano Ronaldo scored from nearby.
Just like Tuesday night, everything looked like it would end in a draw, until Jesse Lingard for the rescue for United this time. In the 89th minute, ‘JLingz’ put it in the top right corner to win it for the Red Devils. Lingard did not want to celebrate against his former club, but he definitely needed this moment.
In addition to this, West Ham were awarded a penalty in the 90+3′ minute to add more late drama. Fortunately for Manchester United, David De Gea blocked the penalty to take all 3 points. Nevertheless, Jess Lingard will be the biggest talking point due to his late minute deciders.
