This morning it was made official by UEFA that the Euros and Copa America champions will face each other off next summer.

“UEFA and CONMEBOL have today announced the broadening of their existing cooperation as well as the staging of a match between the UEFA EURO 2020 winners Italy and the CONMEBOL Copa América 2021 winners Argentina during the international window in June 2022 at a venue to be confirmed.”

UEFA, Tuesday 28 September 2021

This matchup between the European and South American champions has been in the making for several years now. What started as a wild idea by COMMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez back in 2017, will now be a reality 5 years later. Now, soccer fans will be treated with an exciting game between two World Cup winners. Two champions who were finally able to achieve cup glory after a long drought.

If this matchup proves to be a success, then we could see match series like this more often. This could even inspire matchups like, for example, a series between the North and South American champions. This could spark the return of the FIFA Confederations Cup. Unfortunately, it is likely that federations like UEFA and COMMEBOL will agree to that after opposing it a while back.

Champions Tribute To Maradona?

Everything seemed to be aligning as a tribute game for soccer legend Diego Armando Maradona. It has been rumored by OneFootball that the game will be played in the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples.

“the current champions of Europe will face the current champions of South America at an undisclosed venue. [But,] Reports in Italy though, suggest that the game will take place in Naples in honour of Diego Maradona.”

OneFootball, Alex Mott. 28 September 2021

A just after a year of Maradona’s passing, his native country and the country he lived in for his prime years will face off in honor of him. Now imagine the scenes, Lionel Messi scoring the game winner in Naples, Italy. Imagine, the whole stadium bowing down to Diego Maradona’s heir, finally admitting that Messi has surpassed him.
