In a year of crazy upsets, the unimaginable happened in a primetime game Saturday night. Unranked Texas A&M scored a field goal as time expired to beat the defending national champions and #1 ranked Alabama, 41-38. This upset snapped a 19-game winning streak. It also marks the end of the Crimson Tide’s 100-game win streak over unranked teams, which dates back to coach Nick Saban’s first season in Tuscaloosa, in 2007.

This victory by Texas A&M came on coach Jimbo Fisher’s 56th birthday. The unique present was extra special, as Fisher’s win is the first time a former assistant coach of Saban’s was successful in besting his former boss on the field. Saban is now 24-1 against proteges of his. Fisher was an assistant under Saban at LSU.

Control By The Aggies

While Seth Small kicked the 28-yard game winning field goal to push A&M over Bama in the last seconds, quarterback Zach Calzada put down some amazing stats. Of his 31 attempted passes, 21 were completed, for a total of 285 yards. This effort resulted in three touchdowns and an interception.

Heading into halftime, Texas A&M was ahead 24-10. During the third quarter, a punt was returned 96-yards for a touchdown by Devon Achane. Alabama worked their way into the lead throughout the second half. However, A&M tied the game at 38 when Ainias Smith caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Calzada with three minutes left in the game. The Aggies defense forced a punt that set up the offense for a few quick plays. This drive resulted in the field goal that won the game.

Alabama’s Answer

Bryce Young, Alabama’s quarterback, threw for 369 yards and three touchdowns. Jameson Williams added 146 yards receiving, while Brian Robinson Jr pitched in 147 yards rushing.

DeMarcco Hellams blocked a punt by Nik Constantinou in the third quarter. King Mwikuta then landed on the ball in the end zone for a touchdown.

The question that is on everyone’s mind is how many positions Alabama will fall after this loss to an unranked team. We will need to wait a few more hours to find out.
