Ayton’s Season Review
After an incredible Playoffs debut, many assumed Deandre Ayton would receive a max extension from the Phoenix Suns this summer. The franchise’s big and number one overall pick averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds on 66 percent shooting in the Suns’ finals run. Furthermore, Ayton made tremendous strides throughout the year, becoming a dominant presence on both sides of the ball. In fact, Chris Paul was claiming that they would get the big man a handsome contract. After going toe to toe with the MVP, having memorable game-winners, and becoming an elite defender, it’s hard to argue against a contract. However, recent news shows that Ayton isn’t getting a deal anytime soon.
Deandre Ayton made it clear that he expected to come to terms on a max contract offer this offseason. Yet, Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver refused to offer the deal due to financial burdens. Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that the big man is incredibly unhappy with the Phoenix Suns. A max offer would’ve been worth around 173 million over five years. While many of Ayton’s peers were given this offer, the big man wasn’t. This is a financial commitment the Suns weren’t ready to make. Furthermore, Wojnarowski states that the Suns were willing to offer a max deal in the range of three to four years. However, these talks weren’t able to come to fruition. As a result, the Suns and Ayton are in a tricky situation. Moreover, Phoenix is hoping to build a contender for years to come. However, without Ayton in the mix, these dreams become incredibly more difficult. Hopefully, Deandre Ayton and the Phoenix Suns can come to a long-term solution next offseason.
