Notre Dame Fighting Irish Outlast USC Trojans

Notre Dame Vs USC
Robert Franklin, South Bend Tribune

Notre Dame Fighting Irish had another big win against USC, 31 to 16, and continues to make a push for the College Football Playoffs. They have won the past four times they have played USC. Both teams made strides so far this season and USC seems like they have not made the right amount to compete with Notre Dame.

Offensive Greatness

Notre Dame Fighting Irish has not had a really dominant offensive win so far this season. They had 383 total yards and 213 passing yards and 170 rushing yards. Their rushing game was the best that we have seen all year. Kyren Williams had the best game of his season and finally broke 100 rushing yards. He had 25 attempts for 138 rushing yards and had two touchdowns. Jack Coan had an average game but was had great plays that led to long and good drives. He was 20 for 28 for 189 passing yards and one touchdown. The offense looked like they are starting to get better and more confident.

USC had a good offensive game but it did not show on the scoreboard. They had three huge players that kept this game a lot closer than it was. Kedon Slovis had 27 completions for 299 passing yards but zero interceptions. Keaontay Ingram had 24 rushing attempts for 138 rushing yards. The star of the USC offense did have a another great game. Drake London had 171 receiving yards on 15 catches. USC just could not find the inzone.

Two Different Defenses

Notre Dame had a average defensive day but held the USC offense to only 16 points. Kyle Hamilton got hurt early in the game with a knee injury so London could have another great game. USC had a great performance stat wise but were not able to hold Notre Dame’s offense. They allowed Notre Dame’s best rushing game of the season. The game plan going into this game for USC was not how they needed to play this game. Three down lineman against a Notre Dame offensive line that hasn’t had the best year really was confusing.

Final Thoughts

Notre Dame finally is looking like they are hopefully going to start to find their footing and get past the last few weeks of the season. In addition, their rushing game has been getting better and better each game and this is going to open up the game for them a lot more. USC does not look good and their game plan for both offense and defense were not what they needed. They started the game off slow and once that happened then the game just got out of hand.
