We all knew this day was coming, but even so, Ronald Koeman still takes the headlines.
Wednesday evening, just minutes after Barcelona lost to Rayo Vallecano 1-0, the club announced the long-awaited sacking of their head manager.
In a statement from the club’s website: “Barcelona has relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first team coach. The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano. Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva.
“FC Barcelona wishes to thank him for his service to the Club and wishes him all the best in his professional career.”
What Led Koeman Here
Wednesday’s loss to Rayo was the club’s third loss in their last four games. It also did not help that their most recent loss before that was in the famed El Clásico against Real Madrid, where Barca saw themselves lose 2-1. The match was Ronald Koeman’s third El Clásico defeat in a row.
After that match on Sunday, video circulated online of Koeman’s car trying to leave the stadium surrounded by angry fans.
Once a powerhouse in Spanish football, Barcelona currently sits in 9th place in La Liga. The team so far has only mustered 15 points domestically. Earlier this month, the club suffered an away defeat to Atletico Madrid, with Luis Suarez mocking Ronald Koeman after his goal celebration.
Barca have also failed to impress in the Champions League, humiliating themselves with memorable losses to both Bayern Munich and Benfica.
Who Will Take Koeman’s Job?
With club president, Joan Laporta, finally getting his wish to sack Koeman. Names are already being dropped of who will take the Dutchman’s place. Some of the names mentioned have been former midfielder Xavi, Belgium coach Roberto Martinez, and Italian legend Andrea Pirlo.
No matter who officially takes the now vacant role. They surely will have their work cut out for them. The pressure to take Barcelona back up to the top from its current state of poisoned chalice will be immense, and every step of theirs will be scrutinized.
