This version of NHL Rumors will cover the Florida Panthers, Buffalo Sabres, and Chicago Blackhawks. Coaching changes, Eichel trade rumors, and a team in damage control.
Florida Panthers – Joel Quenneville Resigns
Rumor: Per insider Elliotte Friedman on the Jeff Marek podcast. In the wake of the Kyle Beach controversy, Joel Quenneville has resigned as head coach of the Florida Panthers. For the time being assistant coach Andrew Brunette has taken over behind the bench, but for how long?
Analysis: The ramifications of the Kyle Beach abuse case may take a while to absorb and fix. Yet, the people involved are being dealt with accordingly. The fact that hurts the Florida Panthers is that they have a perfect 7-0 record this 2021-22 season. Monumental events affecting their head coach could be tough for the team to endure.
It’s not uncommon for a team to also be motivated by situations beyond their control and rally around the new head coach. Yet, will Brunette be behind the bench for long? Kevin Weeks from TSN, NHL Network, ESPN feels someone else may be in the picture to replace Quenneville.
Put that on our breakfast cereal and try to digest it! Tortorella is a skilled head coach with a flare for controversy, yet is he the right fit for the Panthers? Keep CSM’s NHL Rumors in your reading choices to find out.
Buffalo Sabres – Jack Eichel To Vegas?
Rumor: Per Elliotte Friedman on the Jeff Marek podcast. Again on the same podcast Friedman made it known that the Vegas Golden Knights are very interested in tapping into the Jack Eichel sweepstakes. He states that things have been quiet which could means talks are taking place with no publicity about it being released.. yet.
Analysis: It seems scary to think of a player of Jack Eichel‘s capabilities in Vegas, but with Mark Stone out for who knows how long, the Vegas Golden Knights could afford Eichel’s rich $10 million salary. Stone is on injured reserve now. But, if he gets moved to long term injured reserve his $9.5 million cap hit could be used to gather in Eichel to the city that never sleeps.
The rest of the NHL may be in for some jealousy IF Vegas can pull this off. Certainly, Eichel would need about four months to heal from the much needed neck surgery he has been politicking for to go forward. What may have increased the process is the fact that Eichel is now threatening to file a grievance with the Players’ Association if things don’t change.
AND… this just in before this gets published. More spice to this rumor for certain!
If any team can figure it out, the Vegas team can. Be sure to follow along and this NHL Rumors story is not completed yet.
Chicago Blackhawks – Damage Control
Rumor: Per Scooby Axson of usatoday.com. In the wake of the results of the Jenner & Block investigative report into Kyle Beach’s abuse case, Rocky Wirtz, Chairperson of the Blackhawks has requested that convicted sex offender Brad Aldrich’s name be removed from the Stanley Cup.
Analysis: There’s no doubt that as an organization, the Chicago Blackhawks are in full force damage control. Don’t forget that this team had a record for consecutive sellouts, and news like this could only keep folks away from going to the games.
Removing Aldrich’s name from the Cup is a good first step. In addition, the organization needs to a take deep look into how this happened and what they can do to prevent it from ever happening again. Above of all, people turned their heads the other way instead of reporting the abuse at the time and dealing with the consequences. Ten years is way too long for this to have gone on without justice.
In addition, Quenneville’s name could also be removed. That just adds to the controversy. It may take quite a long time for the team to recover from their mistakes and how it was mishandled. In the end, just think what Kyle Beach has had to deal with through all of this.
