This version of NHL Rumors features the Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks, and Carolina Hurricanes. Let’s see what’s happening.

Toronto Maple Leafs – Jack Campbell, Travis Dermott, Justin Holl

Rumor #1 : Per Michael Traikos- Toronto Sun. When one speaks about the Toronto Maple Leafs the topic of goaltending and the salary cap always gets covered. According to Traikos the team should have extended goalie Jack Campbell in the offseason. Per his agent Kurt Overhardt, Campbell may demand as much as $5 million, and that will send the already crunched Maple Leafs cap space into a tizzy.

Analysis: Even the NHL rumors stating that the team is talking to Campbell about his possible extension was shot down by Overhardt. “Whoever said we’re talking is full of crap. That’s so inaccurate. I can tell you that there’s been no material discussions (with the Leafs). Jack just wants to play hockey. That’s it.”

The salary cap for the team will be very tight again next season. They will have five restricted free agents and three unrestricted. The total, if they kept all eight at their present salary (which won’t happen), is $8.3 million. As it stands right now without those eight players included, they will only have $6.22 million of cap space. Something’s got to give.

Second Rumor

Rumor #2: Per James Mirtle – The Athletic. The Toronto Maple Leafs have been talking to teams about two of their defensemen. Justin Holl and Travis Dermott have been discussed according to multiple sources.

Analysis: There is a reason why the Maple Leafs who are not really deep on the blue line are attempting to move two D-men. Two young blueliners named Rasmus Sandin and Timothy Liljegren are playing well enough at a lower salary range. If Holl and Dermott must sit in the press box, they’d rather be traded. Losing Holl’s $2 million cap hit along with Dermott’s $1.5 millon layout has got to be a motivating factor here. Both players also just have one year remaining on their deals. Chicago Blackhawks – Jeremy Colliton

Rumor: Per Brian La Rose – The Chicago Blackhawks have fired head coach Jeremy Colliton. Assistants Tomas Mitell and Sheldon Brookbank have been relieved of their duties effective immediately. Derek King, who had been coaching the AHL Rockford IceHogs takes over as interim head coach. This move had been rumored to happen.

Look, it doesn’t take a hockey genius to determine that the Blackhawks are a total mess this season. Their general manager and even former head coach (Joel Quenneville) and now their present (or past in this case) head coach have all gotten their pink slips, or resigned. Disgrace is starting to fill the franchise at every turn.

They were the top drawing club in the NHL, and now are down to just 18,470 or 93.7 percent capacity. Colliton was being booed after disgusting performances. The team added such stars as Marc-Andre Fleury, Tyler Johnson, and Seth Jones, yet they are sporting a 1-9-2 record. Colliton didn’t stand a chance here, but his record of 87-92-26 wasn’t doing the trick in any circumstances.

Carolina Hurricanes – Came Close In Eichel Trade

Rumor: Per Pierre LaBrun on #TSNHockey Insider. The Carolina Hurricanes were lurking in the background on the Jack Eichel trade front if the stakes would come down on the return. The Calgary Flames were also close. And, even the Arizona Coyotes were trying to get involved as a third party team if salary was needed to be carried. Of course, the Coyotes would have wanted to add to their treasure chest of draft picks had that happened.

It’s really difficult to swallow the fact that the Vegas Golden Knights will be loaded by adding Jack Eichel, but throwing in the Hurricanes who have started this season undefeated is crazy. The return the Sabres would have demanded was too steep for the Hurricanes. They wanted Brett Nesce or Seth Jarvis and that wasn’t happening.

This indicates there’s always a lot more going on in the background when major trades are being consummated. Lots of wheeling and dealing goes on, that’s for certain.
