GM Mayock shoulders blame for Arnette

An Instagram video was captured last Friday, November 5th, showing now former 1st round pick Damon Arnette brandishing a gun and threatening to kill someone. Although the full context of the video is unknown, GM Mike Mayock and the Raiders have waived Arnette, a former 2020 1st round draft pick.

In a conference call with the media, Raiders GM Mike Mayock made it clear that the Raiders’ organization does not tolerate this behavior, though waiving Arnette was a painful decision. You can listen to the whole conference call on here.

The Raiders have been in the news recently for all of the wrong reasons. This incident comes less than a week after WR Henry Ruggs III crashed his car into another car at over 100 mph. Ruggs’ recklessness killed 23 year old Vegas resident Tina O. Tintor, per ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez and The Associated Press.

Talent trumps character

The Raiders’ evaluation of character was brought into question on the call, and Mayock shouldered the blame for drafting Arnette.

Mayock said, “We found the risk acceptable after doing more homework on Arnette than anybody we’ve done in the years I’ve been here,” Mayock said. “Obviously, we missed. That is 100% on me.”

  1. Mayock believed that the Raiders organization could help Arnette both on and off the field. He also stated that Arnette has a good heart. He went on to say that Arnette can turn it around and still be succesful in the league.
  2. Mike Mayock took 100% of the blame. However, since they did more homework on Arnette than any player previously, I wonder how many red flags circled around Arnette before the draft.
  3. Highlighting the notion that Mayock “found the risk acceptable,” begs the question, where would the Raiders (or any team) draw the line? At what point would the risk no longer be acceptable? Damon Arnette went 19th overall in the 2020 draft. Even if a team did avoid him due to his character, a top 20 pick suggests there were other teams plenty interested.

I do not pretend to know everything about about Damon Arnette, Mike Mayock, or the Raiders organization. Though I have to think that if Arnette had been a 6th or 7th round talent, he would not have been drafted.

Talent, and the winning potential it brings, trumps character.
