In CSM’s Sunday edition of NHL Rumors, we discuss the Nashville Predators, Seattle Kraken, and Arizona Coyotes. Let’s see what’s happening.

Nashville Predators – Filip Forsberg

Rumor: Per Pierre LaBrun – The Athletic.com. LaBrun reports that Filip Forsberg is on the last year of a six-year $6 million AAV deal. He wants a max eight-year deal and notes that Max Duchene and Ryan Johansen are both getting $8 million. So, an eight-year deal just north of $8 million a year is where Forsberg wants to start. That is yet to be determined.

Analysis: The Nashville Predators are going to have some cap space next season with a projected $25 million in the pot. Whether they are willing to spend much of it on Forsberg is questionable. He has been injured quite a bit and even though he does have an average of 29.4 goals per 82 games, that doesn’t help if he’s injured.

Will the Preds see fit to sign him to the long-term deal worth more than $8 million per year? They may be deciding if it’s worth the risk. Granted he is a valuable player, and they could pursue trading him if they feel his price is too high.

Seattle Kraken – Mark Giordano

Rumor: Per Pierre LaBrun – The Athletic.com. One intriguing player decision awaits. Seattle Kraken captain Mark Giordano is a UFA after the season. Depending on where Seattle sits in the standings closer to March 21, that could be a tough call.

Seattle Kraken general manager Ron Francis mentioned, “I think that’s a decision we make a little bit down the road here,” Francis said of the Giordano situation. “Right now we’re still trying to figure out what we have, and who works well with who, try to mesh it all together. Certainly, Mark is a terrific pro, been in the game a while, and a great leader for us and the organization, representing us not only on the ice but in the community as well. We’ll see where things go moving forward with the franchise overall.’’

Analysis: If the Kraken wait to trade Giordano at the NHL Trade Deadline they could increase their return with more teams being able to bid because of cap issues. However, if another team struggling on defense is willing to throw in a decent return, why not pull the trigger and start working on the future now?

It’s a waiting game to see how well Giordano does as the trade deadline approaches. He has a decent three goals and four assists in 14 games. His worth could go north or south, or at his age of 38 he could be susceptible to injury. It’s tough to trade an injured player. Watch for NHL rumors on Giordano.

Arizona Coyotes – Trade Coming?

Rumor: Per Stanley Sweeneynhltraderumors.me The Arizona Coyotes may be closing in on trading three veteran unrestricted free agents on their roster.

Analysis: The hapless Arizona Coyotes are really struggling with a 1-12-1 record before action on Saturday November 13th. They can’t score, have very little defense and their goaltending isn’t great either. The three players who could be packing their bags are Phil Kessel, Johan Larsson, and Antoine Roussel. Their salary outlay comes to $11.2 million.

It has been general manager Bill Armstrong’s plan to stockpile as many draft picks going forward as possible. And thus far, he has done just that with three first rounders and five second rounders in 2022. He may also be attempting to gain more cap space to see if he can sign some free agents. The team currently has $9.5 million in cap space. If trading any of the three (especially Kessel) means retaining some salary, he will have that prerogative.

NHL rumors will be following the Coyotes around between now and the trade deadline. It goes without saying, they only have one direction to go…and that’s up. Right now they dwell in the basement of the NHL standings.
