The Blue Jays have signed an extension with star right-hander Jose Berrios, covering the 2022-2028 seasons, pending a physical. Over the course of that span, he is expected to make $131MM. The 27-year-old was acquired from the Twins at the trade deadline, set to reach free agency after the 2022 season. Instead, the Blue Jays will keep him around for an extended stay, hoping that he anchors their rotation well into the future.

At the trade deadline, there were multiple teams interested in the services of Berrios. Over the course of his career, Jose Berrios has thrown 851.2 innings, struck out 857 batters, walked 266, and pitched to a 4.04 career ERA. In 12 starts with the Blue Jays, Berríos posted a 3.58 ERA with 78 strikeouts over 70 1/3 innings, pitching at least six innings in each of his final seven starts. Those numbers, unsurprisingly, fall in line with Berríos’ career stats as one of the most consistent pitchers in baseball.

The extension for the Blue Jays will stabilize the rotation for a longer period of time. Berríos will now lead a rotation that features Hyun Jin Ryu and Alek Manoah.Though as far as the rest of the rotation goes, it is still a big question for the Jays. They also may have to replace Marcus Semien at second base with him being a free agent. A lot of work to do and the Blue Jays are not done yet. Nonetheless, this is one of the biggest splashes we have seen so far, with a few free agents (especially the bigger names) holding out until the new CBA is signed.
