This edition of CSM’s NHL Rumors will include what’s happening with the Vancouver Canucks, Chicago Blackhawks, and Ottawa Senators. Let’s dig in and see what NHL rumors are out there.

Vancouver Canucks – Travis Green/Jim Benning

Rumor: Per Stanley Sweeney – Vancouver Canucks head coach Travis Green has yet to lose confidence in his group. Despite the team’s recent struggles, Green feels the fan base needs to stick behind them as he prepares his club to turn things around.

Analysis: While Green seems optimistic, the Canucks have been playing terrible hockey. They’ve dropped four straight and were outscored 22-8. Green met with the media after this four-game stretch.

Their special teams show that improvement is well overdue. They are worst in the NHL on the penalty kill with a poor 62.3 percent success rate. Their power play is struggling with a mere 15.3 percent rate. When teams come out of the gate this slowly sometimes changes are needed.

Green signed a two-year deal recently yet his .482 points percentage leaves much to be desired. It they continue in their losing ways, either Green or general manager Jim Benning will need to take the fall… or maybe both.

Chicago Blackhawks – Toews, Kane Future

Rumor: Per Stanley Sweeney – The Chicago Blackhawks currently sit at 4-9-2 through their first 15 games this season and if the team doesn’t turn things around, some believe management will approach both Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane about waiving their no-movement clauses.

Analysis: Both Blackhawks star players have one year remaining on their eight-year $84 million deals. It would be difficult if not impossible to trade either player without retaining some salary. The actual salary for both players is more like $6.9 million, but the cap hit would still remain at that huge $10.5 million number.

It seems the Blackhawks have righted the ship recently, winning three straight under new interim head coach Derek King. You can be certain if they falter going forward some things will need to change. Whether or not that means Toews and/or Kane will be involved in those those changes is yet to be determined.

Ottawa Senators – Tierney, Sanford

Rumor: Per Stanley Sweeney – The Ottawa Senators are not expected to make the playoffs this season as this year will be concentrated on developing some of their younger core. While Brady Tkachuk is now leading the charge in Ottawa, expect to see a couple of their depth players moved for assets closer to the trade deadline.

Analysis: Two players who could be on the move according to Sweeney are Chris Tierney and Zach Sanford. Tierney has a $3.5 million cap hit and his deal ends after this season. He could certainly be a third-line center helping out a contending team. Tierney has tallied five goals and one assist in 15 games. He has playoff experience appearing in 40 games with 12 points. He’d be a good pickup for some team needing his skills.

Sanford is a tough winger who stands 6′-4″, 207 pounds. While he won’t score a lot, the can use his large frame to move opposing players out. He has handed out 32 hits and has two goals, one assist in 15 games this season. He has a $2 million contract which also expires after this season.

The Sens need to continue their rebuild and moving one or both of these players seems like a good step going forward. Check out CSM’s NHL rumors to see what happens in Ottawa.
