Number one Georgia hosted Charleston Southern on Senior Day for their last home game of 2021. It was an emotional day, but a fantastic one. Georgia came out victorious, winning 56-7 to stay untouched with an overall 11-0 record. Charleston Southern falls to 4-6 overall to end thier 2021 season.
Georgia honored an abundant of Seniors during the pregame ceremony. One Senior who was honored was nose tackle Jordan Davis, a finalist for the Outland and Bronko Nagurski trophies for one of the top linemen in the nation. He mostly plays defense, but he can also play on the offensive line.
Georgia received the ball first, but struggled to do much. Zamir White marched down the field to gain 38 yards. Then, Stetson Bennett’s pass was intercepted by the Charleston Southern defense.
Georgia’s defense held Charleston Southern from scoring on a three and out. The Bulldogs got the ball back with James Cook running 40 yards down the field. Then on third and 12 at the Charleston Southern 35 yard line, Jermaine Burton caught a pass from Stetson Bennett for 14 yards. Jordan Davis made his way in the end-zone for the touchdown on second down with 9:01 left in the first quarter. With 5:33 left in quarter one, Kenny McIntosh ran downfield for 32 yards to score another touchdown.
Charleston Southern finally scored with 5:40 left in the third quarter. On third and six from Charleston Southern’s 35-yard line, Georgia’s Xavian Sorey intercepted the pass, but Charleston Southern’s Garris Schwarting took the ball from him on their 35-yard line. Garris took off for 65 yards to score their only touchdown of the game.
Quarterback Carson Beck got some playing time for Georgia. He threw a 9-yard pass to Brett Seither, who scored a touchdown.
Both teams gave it their all, despite the lopsided score and stats. Georgia had 488 yards of total offense. The defense held Charleston Southern to 126 total yards of offense, 58 passing yards, and 68 rushing yards. Georgia ended the day with 32 carries for 233 yards. Jordan scored first, while Zamir White had four carries totaling 83 yards along with a touchdown. James Cook had six carries for 57 yards and a touchdown. Daijun Edwards had six carries for 21 yards and also scored a touchdown.
Together all three quarterbacks had four touchdowns, 20-of-37 255 yards, and two interceptions.
In quarter three, Kamron Smith helped create another Charleston Southern to keep Georgia from scoring.
What is next for Georgia? They travel to Atlanta on Saturday, November 27, with a showdown against Georgia Tech for their last regular-season game. Georgia hopes to finish off the regular season undefeated to earn a 12-0 perfect record. The showdown against Georgia Tech will be on CBS, and kickoff is set for 12 P.M. Eastern. Georgia has to stay focused and relatively healthy.
What is next for Charleston Southern? Their 2021 season comes to a close with an overall record of 4-6. Charleston Southern will then turn their attention to next season.
Players that don’t usually play got playing time this weekend, which was good to see. Although Georgia dominated the game even with backups contributing, Charleston Southern gave everything they had. Both teams played hard. Stats and scores do not always show the heart, hustle, and mentality.
