The Wisconsin Badgers will travel to Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. To face off against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, in the annual rivalry game for Paul Bunyan’s Axe. Wisconsin has been in possession of the axe since 2019, and also holds the better all-time record of 62-60-8.
What’s at Stake?
The Badgers will clinch the Big Ten West with a win in today’s game, and will play the winner of the Ohio State/Michigan in the Big Ten Championship game next week. But that doesn’t mean this game doesn’t mean anything for Minnesota. Not just are bragging rights on the table, but also a chance to climb up a step on the ladder of the bowl game selection process.
Keys to Victory
Minnesota played exceptionally well against Iowa a couple weeks ago, but wasn’t able to capitalize late and come out with the victory. The Gophers are going to need to capture an early game lead, and steadily maintain it, in order to upset the Badgers. They will also need to shutdown the dominant Braelon Allen. Who has recorded 100+ rushing yards and 11 touchdowns in his past 7 games, including a 200+ rushing yard effort in last week’s win over Nebraska.
Another key to victory for Minnesota is offensive balance. If the Gophers can keep an adjusted balance between play calls, it would give them just the extra boost they need to overcome this Wisconsin defense. Tanner Morgan although has proved that he can only be somewhat reliable in close-game scenarios. Meaning that Minnesota will also have to rely on running backs Ky Thomas and Mar’Keise Irving to get the job done on offense as well.
Wisconsin will just have to keep playing the way they’ve been playing, and victory will sure come to them easily. The Badgers are on a 7 game winning streak, with all 3 of their losses coming from the first 4 games of the season. All against teams that were ranked at the time. The defense has been great all year, and is really not a concern for them heading into today. The main focal point for the Badgers to win this football game, is their offense. Braelon Allen and Jake Ferguson are emerging stars that headline the Wisconsin offense, that seemingly just found out how to score. As long as the Badgers defense is in check, and Allen and Ferguson can get the offense rolling, Wisconsin is in good hands.
This game could truly go anyway, but this is my ultimate prediction;
Both teams will go back and forth, in a very hard fought battle. But Wisconsin will ultimately pull away late in the game, powered by a multi-touchdown game from Braelon Allen. Which will lead the Badgers to a 35-21 victory over the Gophers.
