In August, Brazilian Gunner Gabriel Magalhães, 23, fought off two thieves in his garage. The assailants were attempting to steal his $45k Mercedes, as evidenced by footage from the Gunner’s garage camera.
Gunner Gabriel Defends Against Tottenham Intruder
The 6’3” Arsenal stalwart and teammate Nuno Tavares had just returned from a night out. As shown in the video, upon exiting the car, Gabriel is approached by one of the masked men who is wielding a metal bat. He hands over the keys. Subsequently, the defender parries a swing from one of the attackers, before landing a blow himself.
One of the criminals, Abderaham Muse, 26, was sentenced to five years in prison on Monday. Police managed to identify the Tottenham drug dealer from DNA retrieved off of the man’s hat, which fell off during the struggle.
Arteta Praises Gabriel
Asked about the crime during his press conference earlier this week, Arsenal manger Mikel Arteta praised Gabriel’s strength and character. “Obviously it is not a nice thing to go through when you have family involved and they are trying to access your house. Gabi showed a lot of character, you see the reaction he had straight away. Credit to the boy. After that he was fine.” Regular viewers of Arsenal games will be familiar with the physically dominant and brave play of Gabriel. Therefore, this incident – and how he reacted – was entirely on brand.
Longtime fans of Arsenal will be reminded of a similar incident, involving former Gunner Mesut Ozil and left-back Sead Kolasinac. In that case, the Bosnian was also able to repel a duo of would-be carjackers. Maybe the next time someone targets an Arsenal player, they’ll shy away from defenders.
