Nick Martinez signs a four year deal.

The San Diego Padres have added to their bullpen on what appears to be the last day before the MLB Lockout…

Earlier they brought in Luis Garcia and Robert Suarez:

And now on the eve of the lockout, the Padres have signed Nick Martinez.

Nick Martinez last pitched in the MLB while he was with the Texas Rangers from 2014-2017. Within two years, he sped through their farm system as a starter, but it wasn’t until recently in Japan that he found his success. From 2018 to now, he has pitched for both Nippon Ham Fighters and the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks.

Good or Bad?

Picking up Martinez is definitely a gamble and he will most likely be used either out of the bullpen or as depth. This last season with the Hawks in Japan, he threw 149.2 innings, while striking out 146 batters and pitching to a 1.62 ERA.

The gamble though lies in whether he can translate that success back to the MLB or if he will fall back to the Martinez that the Texas Rangers had.

San Diego already sports a rotation featuring Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, Joe Musgrove, Chris Paddack and Mike Clevinger. With top-prospect Mackenzie Gore, and Ryan Weathers in the wings of the MLB.

No matter which version of Martinez that the Padres get, he will more than likely be a back-end-of-the-rotation starter or a long relief option out of the pen. With how much the Padres struggled with the injury bug in their rotation last season, Martinez will add an option that newly appointed manager Bob Melvin can go to to eat innings. There are rumors that the Padres will use him as a potential depth starter.

THE CONNECTION

The Florida native was drafted and developed by the Rangers, where current San Diego president of baseball operations A.J. Preller was then a prominent member of the scouting department.
