Oregon Ducks Hiring Dan Lanning As Next Head Coach

Joshua L. Jones / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Oregon Ducks have found their new football coach; they hired Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning to take over Oregon’s football program.

Lanning was promoted to Georgia’s defensive coordinator in 2019. While under Lanning this year, Georgia leads the country in points allowed, giving up only 9.5 points per game. Also, the Bulldogs are second in total defense (253.2) and ranked third against the run and the pass.

Dan Lanning

The Georgia defensive coordinator played linebacker in the Division 2 level at William Jewell in Missouri. Lanning began his coaching career at Park Hills High School, where he coached special teams. He spent three years at the high school before joining Pittsburgh as a graduate assistant. After a year in Pittsburgh, Lanning went to Arizona State as a graduate assistant, and in his second year there, he was promoted to recruiting coordinator.

It was not until 2014 when Lanning got his first on-field coaching experience coaching defensive backs at Sam Houston State. Then, in 2015, he was a graduate assistant for Alabama. After his time at Alabama, Lanning coached inside linebackers at Memphis. Two years later, Lanning joined Kirby Smart at Georgia and became the outside linebackers coach before becoming the defensive coordinator.

This is somewhat of a surprising move by the Ducks; they reportedly had a high-level interest in California Bears coach Justin Wilcox and were believed to be going hard at former Oregon coach, current UCLA coach Chip Kelly.

While it is a surprising hire, Lanning is an outstanding hire for the Ducks. First, you are getting a defensive-minded coach and someone who has coached in many big games. Lanning has coached against many talented offenses and showed the ability to contain them. Second, Oregon has always been an offensive team. Now with Lanning, they’ll look to their defense to set them apart from the rest of the Pac-12.

The new Oregon coach is also strong at recruiting, which is another big plus for the Ducks. Now Lanning must put together a strong coaching staff and pick an excellent offensive coordinator.
