This Sunday edition of CSM’s NHL rumors includes the latest from the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and Arizona Coyotes.

Chicago Blackhawks – Patrick Kane

Rumor: Per Larry Brooks – Would you trade for Patrick Kane if you were the New York Rangers?

Analysis: With Patrick Kane‘s $10.5 million contract expiring after next season, the Chicago Blackhawks must seriously consider how to move forward. When you look at it from a financial standpoint, saving the team $10.5 million may be a no-brainer. Yet, any deal which could go down will require the Windy City club to retain some salary.

Brooks speculates some possible returns going to Chicago if a trade can be worked out with the New York Rangers. Would you get Kane if it cost you Kaapo Kakko (but not Alexis Lafreniere), Nils Lundqvist (or Zac Jones or Matthew Robertson but not Braden Schneider), (but not Will Cuylle or Brennan Othmann) and a 2022 first-rounder?

The dream line of what previously included Kane and Artemi Panarin could be reunited. Throw in Ryan Strome in the middle and that line would certainly be an offensive dynamo.

The other questions would be if such a trade could go down do you wait till around the March 21st trade deadline to pull it off? Kane just turned 33 years old and even though he isn’t slowing down, waiting another year wouldn’t help the Rangers immediate plans to raise the Cup.

Detroit Red Wings – Nick Leddy

Rumor: Per Rob Ellis – Will Nick Leddy be traded at the NHL trade deadline?

With Moritz Seider developing into the best defenseman on the Detroit Red Wings squad, is it time to move Nick Leddy? He is in the last year of his $38.5 million seven-year contract and is 30 years old. Has he reached his peak?

General manager Steve Yzerman is a crafty wheeler-and-dealer who may be holding his cards close to his chest to see what Leddy may be worth on the trade market. If Leddy could help out a Cup contending team who has injuries, will he bring back a first round pick?

Don’t underestimate Yzerman’s shrewd abilities to continue to improve the Red Wings roster. They are currently sitting fourth in the Atlantic with 29 points in 28 games. They may not make the playoffs, but you can be assured Yzerman is thinking three moves ahead in this hockey chess match.

Arizona Coyotes – Financial Stress

Rumor: Per Craig Morgan – @PHNX_Sports. On December 8th, news broke that the City of Glendale could lock the Coyotes out of Gila River Arena by December 20th for unpaid bills. Even though the city and the hockey club have had their issues, it has never come down to locking out the team from the building due to unpaid back taxes and other bills including rent.

So, of course the rumors of the team moving were rejuvenated like a corpse. Would they be moving to Houston, or Quebec City? NO. The team actually paid the unpaid bills amounting to $1.2 million.

The irony of all this is that the owner of the team, Alex Meruelo is a billionaire worth some $14 billion. Yet, he allowed his organization to embarrass themselves by not paying taxes for 17 months? The team explained it was due to a “human error.” It’s funny because that was the same explanation last summer when several players bonuses were delinquent.

What does the future hold?

At this point there are two glaring issues at hand. Now that the owner has shown his behavior to be less than financially responsible, how will the City of Tempe take all of this when they consider the proposal to build a new arena there?

The second issue is this team has no place to play after this season. The management group has stated they are into solving it but have not made anything public. News flash to them… the next season starts in ten months. If you want to put on hockey games you had better determine where that might be!

To describe the continuing mess with the Arizona Coyotes it can be stated in two words.

Dumpster fire.
