Shortly after the departure of offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham, Coach Mike Norvell promoted Offensive Line coach Alex Atkins to fill the vacant role. Atkins has been on Norvell’s staff since he took over at FSU in 2019. He began his coaching career at UT-Martin as a graduate assistant where, as a player, Atkins started for four years and twice earned all-conference honors. Previously, he served as the offensive coordinator at Charlotte. There, Atkins helped lead the team to its first bowl game in program history. Prior to that, Atkins spent three seasons at Tulane as assistant head coach and OL coach.
Atkins’ impact was immediately felt at Florida State. Prior to his arrival, the offensive line was dismal at best, often looking incompetent. Under his leadership, the Seminoles have averaged nearly five yards per carry and 200 yards per game, ranking 20th nationally. In 2021, Atkins coached two lineman-Dillan Gibbons and Devontay Love-Taylor to All-ACC honors. The noticeably improved play since his arrival more than proves his value to the program. He will continue to serve as OL coach for the time being.
Additionally, Coach Atkins is a skilled recruiter, gaining national recognition and bringing in high level recruits throughout the state. On Early Signing Day, Atkins successfully landed seven OL commits, four 4-stars and three 3-stars. The Seminoles netted a top 12 recruiting class this year.
Originally reported by Josh Newberg of Noles247; Warchant has since confirmed the report. The deal was officially announced on December 16th.
