News has come out today that Steeler’s Offensive Line Coach Adrian Klemm will be headed to Oregon after the Steelers’ season.

What started as a possibility has quickly grown into reality. Klemm has been the Steelers Head OL Coach this season after serving as the team’s Assistant OL Coach since 2019.

How This Year Has Gone

The offensive line has certainly been under fire this year as they transition. Gone are longtime veterans Ramon Foster, Maurkice Pouncey, Alejandro Villanueva, and David DeCastro. This year the team has started two rookies and one second-year player and has paid the price.

While the team holds up OK in pass protection it has taken a step back from last year. Despite being one of the best in the league at the quick release, Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has taken 33 sacks already this year. He took just 13 in all of last season.

The main problem has been the running game. After spending a first-round pick on Running Back Najee Harris, this team was expected to make a jump. However, they are still in the bottom third in the league of nearly all running metrics.

These issues cannot all go on Klemm. Rookies struggle on the offensive line and often don’t take a leap until after their second off-season programs. The team also brought in another new piece in right guard Trai Turner. Offensive Line is perhaps the position-dependent most upon continuity, so four new starters was never going to turn out well.

What’s To Come

There are a number of options the Steelers could go with should Klemm indeed leave. In-house options are Assistant O-Line Coach Chris Morgan who joined the team this year. Considering the continuity factor this might be the best option so the young players on this roster know who they are learning from.

A long-shot external option is Mike Munchak. Munchak is the offensive line coach for the Denver Broncos and served in the same role for the Steelers from 2014-2018. Munchak is one of the league’s top O-Line coaches and a favorite among Steelers fans.

Considering the Broncos could be facing another disappointing season the coaching staff could be out the door. Making Munchak potentially on the market.

Guard/Center B.J. Finney and Right Tackle Chukwuma Okorafor are the only linemen on the team who played for Munchak. Both are set to be free agents this off-season.
