Maryland And Virginia–Tech What To Watch For

Maryland and Virginia Tech meet in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. Kickoff set for 2:15 P.M. Eastern Time on December 29th on ESPN. Maryland and Virginia Tech play at the New York Yankees Baseball Stadium in Bronx, New York. The Hokies enter the bowl game 6-6 overall, 4-4 ACC. Maryland 6-6 overall, 3-6 Big Ten. Watch for a competitive emotional matchup.

What Is On The Line 

Virginia Tech is making their 34th bowl game appearance chasing a victory over Maryland. The Hokies last bowl game victory came in 2016 in the Belk Bowl, coming from behind. Maryland and Virginia Tech last played each other in 2013 in Blacksburg, with Maryland winning in overtime.

Maryland reaches their 28th bowl game, becoming bowl eligible for the first time since 2016. Virginia Tech and Maryland played in the ACC together 2004-2013. The bowl game will be their 32nd game, competing against each other.

What To Watch For 

Watch for enthusiasm and competitiveness for both teams. It will go down to the end. Virginia Tech’s defense against Maryland’s offense will be something to watch. Virginia Tech allows 385.3 total yards, 219.5 passing yards, 165.8 rushing yards per game, and 22.9 points per game.
Linebacker Dax Hollifield is the leader on defense for the Hokies with 88 total tackles, 9.0 for loss, and 4.5 sacks. Cornerback Armani Chatman has seven tackles. Cornerback Dorian Strong 6 tackles along with breaking up passes.

Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa directs Maryland’s offense tossing the ball for 3,595 total yards, 24 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Taulia measures 287.9 passing yards per game. Tayon Fleet-Davis accompanies the offense rushing the ball 664 yards scoring eight touchdowns. Rakim Jarrett 769 receiving yards scoring five touchdowns. Maryland averages 437.4 total yards per game, scoring 27.3 points per game. Tight End Chigoziem Okonwo 29 catches for 259 yards.

Jakorian Bennett leads Maryland’s defense breaking up 13 passes and three interceptions. Ruben Hyppolite II and Tarheeb Still contribute on defense. However, Jordan Mosley and Sam Okuayinonu contribute as well. Jordan has 77 tackles on the season, while Sam is the team leader in tackles for loss 8.5 and 6.0 sacks. The Terps allow 32.4 points, 415.6 total yards, 258.1 passing yards, and 157.5 rushing yards per game.

The Hokies are down several players due to them entering the transfer portal, or opting out of the bowl game declaring for the NFL Draft.

The Hokies score 24.8 points totaling 370.5 yards per game, 179 passing yards, and 190.8 rushing yards. Question for the Hokies offense-who will be the starting quarterback? Connor Blumrick or Tahj Bullock. Connor could start. He has completed 7 of 16 passes for 42 yards, two touchdowns and has carried the ball 41 times for 231 yards and two touchdowns.
Raheem Blackshear is someone to watch. He leads the Hokies offense carrying the ball 121 times for 714 yards scoring six touchdowns.


In conclusion, Maryland and Virginia Tech expect competitiveness with both teams. The game will go down to the last second. Throw out the stats. Anything can happen because this is a brand new game with both teams battling for the win. It will be an exciting game. Virginia Tech could come out victorious.
