Game Recap

Kemba Walker Makes History

Kemba Walker becomes the first Knicks player to get a Triple-Double on Christmas with 10 points, 12 rebounds, ten assists in 40 minutes. Walker did struggle shooting going 3 for 12 from the field, but the offensive problems are solved with Walker back and Barrett returning was great to see. Barrett also struggled from the field, going 1 for 8 for nine points, but it was his first game since December 10th. Randle let the Knicks points with 25 points and 12 rebounds to get his 15th double-double of the season. Other players to score double-digits include Evan Fournier with 15 points shooting 50%, Obi Toppin with 13 points, and rookie Quentin Grimes with 15 points.

Hawks Struggle

Atlanta now becomes 1-2 without young superstar Trae Young. Many NBA fans bookmarked this game because Trae Young would be returning to the Garden. It would have been the first game for Young since eliminating the Knicks in the 1st round of the 2021 Playoffs. But Young was out because he was in the NBA’s health and safety protocols. The Hawks scored season-low 87 points, including 36 points in the 2nd half. John Collins and Delon Wright each had 20 points. The only other players to score in double-digits were Cam Reddish with 10 points and Skylar Mays with 11 points off the bench.

New York Start Game Hot

Randle helped the Knicks with six points during a 19-3 run in the game’s first four minutes. The ball movement improved, and every starter scored during the 19 point run. Atlanta climbed back in the game to build the lead down to nine points. That includes a four-point possession in the final 32 seconds by Bogdan Bogdanovic’s flagrant free throw and a three-pointer.

The Hawks started the 2nd quarter with a 9-5, 35-30 to bring the lead down to five. But the Knicks responded every time Atlanta brought the lead down five, which occurred three times. Another Bogdanovic’s three-pointer got the lead down to four, 51-47, but New York responded with a 10-4 run to get a 61-51 lead at halftime.

Knicks Maintains Lead In Second Half

John Collins was able to rally and bring the lead down to six, 65-59. But New York responded once again with a 16-7 run to get the lead up 15 points, 81-66. The Knicks played Knicks basketball and played defense, which they haven’t done much of this season.

The Hawks outscored the Knicks in the fourth quarter, 21-20. But they couldn’t rally to get the win in the Garden. The Hawks got hot in the fourth quarter shooting 52% but allowed five turnovers. Atlanta couldn’t stop the Knicks at some moments in the fourth, which led to the Knicks getting a win they needed in the Garden, 101-87.

Final Thoughts

Barrett coming back gave the Knicks a boost that needed another critical part of their rotation. Now, these Knicks need to get some consecutive wins with their defensive performance and get back in the playoff picture. The duo of Walker and Randle will be essential if they want to win in the playoffs. Great Christmas gift by the Knicks.

Atlanta has not scored at least 100 points in their last three games and has lost two out of their last three games now. If the Hawks want a chance of winning against the Bulls on Monday and Wednesday, they need Young to get cleared. Solid performance by Collins, but need to get more productive except for Young and Collins.
