Raiders Defense Leads the Way Against Broncos

Ap/David Becker

The Las Vegas Raiders overcome three turnovers to beat the Denver Broncos. With the win, the Raiders improve to 8-7 and keep their playoff hopes alive.

Raiders running back Josh Jacobs had a costly turnover, and right before halftime, Derek Carr threw an interception that the Broncos returned to the one-yard line. Denver punched it to go into halftime with a 13-7 lead.

Defense

The Raiders’ defense put together their best defensive performance of the season. The defense held the Broncos to 18 yards rushing. Las Vegas was getting consistent penetration in the backfield to stop the run. They held Denver to 158 total yards, only eight first downs, and held the Broncos to 1-10 on third downs.

Las Vegas did this with a beat-up secondary and had players missing because of COVID. However, cornerback Desmond Trufant stepped in a big way, with seven tackles and tight coverage down the field.

Josh Jacobs And Offensive Line

Jacobs had an outstanding second half after his fumble. Jacobs stepped up his game; the running back rushed for 129 yards on 27 carries. Jacobs looked quick and ran through tackles. The offensive line did a great job opening up for the running backs to run through. It was the best run-blocking the offensive line did all season. The Raiders rushed for 160 yards.

Derek Carr

Minus the two turnovers, Carr played well without Darren Waller and Bryan Edwards. Carr completed 20 out of 25 passes for 201 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He completed passes to seven different targets. But Carr must clean up the fumbles and costly interceptions for the Raiders to compete for the rest of the season. Also, he must use his legs more.

Receivers Stepping Up

The Raiders needed players to step up with Edwards going on the COVID list before the game. Zay Jones led Las Vegas in catches with six for 50 yards. Tight end Foster Moreau caught four balls for 67 yards and made the game-clinching catch. Carr made an effort early on getting the ball to DeSean Jackson; he finished with four catches for 44 yards. Hunter Renfrow added three catches for 40 yards and a fantastic touchdown.
