Davis Mills Should Be The Texans 2022 Starter

Davis Mills was a necessity pick in the 2021 draft. Houston needed a quarterback because of the ongoing Deshaun Watson situation. Tyrod Taylor was brought in to be the bridge guy, while Mills was mainly viewed as a backup. Unfortunately Taylor got hurt again, and that put Mills into the spotlight. We knew signing Jeff Driskel and trading for Ryan Finley was just to add camp arms. Davis Mills has played well as the season has gone on, and that should warrant a chance to be the guy moving forward.

Who Is Davis Mills?

Mills was a third round pick of out Stanford. Although not all Stanford QBs make it to the NFL, two things are always certain. They are pro ready, and very smart. Mills thus far has 66.6 completion percentage with 12 touchdowns and nine picks. Four of those came in the same game against Buffalo. He has had four games where he has thrown two or more touchdowns. He threw three against New England, two against the Rams, two against Jacksonville, and two against the Chargers. The Texans are 2-2 this season when the rookie throws for two or more touchdowns. However, the Texans are 0-4 when Mills is sacked more than twice, and 2-0 when he is only sacked once as the full time starter.

How Can The Texans Continue To Make Him Better?

Laremy Tunsil being hurt has added to some struggles on the offensive line, who has given up 26 sacks. A healthy Tunsil will help the cause as well as continuing to upgrade at that position. Like at Stanford, he will need a balanced attack with a strong run game. That has been a weakness for the Texans for a couple of seasons now. The team will need to add a running back in the draft such as Breece Hall or Kenneth Walker. There are some young pieces at receiver and tight end with Nico Collins and Brevin Jordan. Brandin Cooks is pretty good but he is not a true number one option. Ultimately, the offseason needs to dedicated to upgrading the offense with a new franchise quarterback. If Houston commits to Davis Mills, they can get back in the mix for the AFC South in 2022.
