Kansas Jayhawks Extend Incredible Streak

Kansas Jayhawks

The Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball team has been one of the best teams in college basketball for a very long time. They are that team once again this season as they are currently 12-1 overall and sit at No. 6 in the AP Top-25.

Since the 2003-04 season they have been under head coach Bill Self who has continued this teams insane success. In those 18 seasons they claimed the regular season top spot in the Big 12 a mighty 15 times including 14 straight. That gives Self a 249-59 regular season conference record.

Conference games take up a majority of the season and each matchup holds a massive weight for each team hoping to prove they are a major force. Teams want to start their schedule against their conference opponents with a big win. Yet, no team has been better at doing this than the Jayhawks.

Last night the Jayhawks extended a streak that predated Self’s time into Roy William’s dominant tenure in Kansas.

A Three Decade Streak

The Jayhawks took on the Oklahoma State Cowboys Tuesday night for their first game against a Big-12 team of the 2021-22 season. Backed by double digit points by Christian Braun, Ochai Agbaji and David McCormack the Jayhawks were able to come away with a big 74-63 win on the road.

This win extended an incredible streak for the Jayhawks. In the 1991-92 season the Jayhawks beat the Missouri Tigers to open conference play. They proceeded to start conference play with a win for the next three decades. This most recent victory over the Cowboys pushed the streak to 31 years. Yes, for the last 31 seasons they have been victorious in their conference opener.

Here are a few interesting notes to expand on how long this has been going on. In 1991-92 the Big 12 was only the Big Eight, at which time there was no Baylor, Texas, Texas Tech or West Virginia. It officially changed in 1996-97. Additionally, Nebraska was a member of the Big Eight and Big 12 before moving to the Big Ten in 2011.

It is impossible to start conference play any better than the Jayhawks have over the past three decades. As the Kansas Jayhawks continue Big 12 conference play they look to reclaim the regular season top spot after coming in second last season.
