The San Antonio Spurs snap their three-game losing streak tonight against the Boston Celtics. San Antonio finishes the sweep this season against the Celtics. Both teams scored below 100 points in both matchups. In the first matchup, the Spurs won 96-88.

Game Recap

The Spurs’ leading scorer tonight was Dejounte Murray, with 22 points, 12 assists, and nine rebounds. Another key player, Jakob Poeltl, failed to get another double-double with 8 points and 14 rebounds. Poeltl was the starter not to score more than 10 points. Derrick White and Devin Vassell scored 17 points to help get the team total of 96 points.

In his first game since Christmas day, Jayson Tatum scored 19 points and eight rebounds. Jaylen Brown scored team-high for the Celtics with 30 points and six rebounds. The other Celtics players to score in double-digits were Marcus Smart with 14 points and off the bench, Dennis Schroder got 15 points.

Game Stays Close Until Fourth Quarter

This game went back-and-forth for the first three quarters. The Spurs began the quarter with an 80-77 lead to start the fourth quarter. The most significant lead for the Spurs before the fourth was six points, while the Celtics’ biggest lead was four points. Jaylen Brown had 28 points in the first three quarters to get the Celtics in the game.

A Keita Bates-Diop three-pointer made the lead five points with about nine minutes left. But Derrick White extended the lead to six points with a two-pointer. Jayson Tatum and Dennis Schroder helped get the lead down to two points at the 4:17 mark of the game.

Final Three Minutes

In the final three minutes of the game, there were four points combined. Dejounte Murray’s two-pointer gave the Spurs the four-point. But Dennis Schroder, on the next possession, responded with a layup. There were three missed shots in the final minute, including the potential game-tying shot by Jaylen Brown, but missed. That sealed the deal for the Spurs to escape with a 99-97 win in Boston to get the season series sweep.

Final Thoughts

Spurs Get Back In the Win Column

For the first time in 2022, the Spurs got a win, and that win was without Doug McDermott, Lonnie Walker IV, and Devontae Cook. This win means head coach Gregg Popovich has become the first coach in NBA history to coach 2,000 games with the same team. On Friday, the Spurs will finish their road trip.

Tatum is Back

It was great seeing Jayson Tatum back on the court tonight for the Celtics. He struggled shooting 6 for 20, but what do you expect when you come off the COVID protocols. Boston will now focus on beating the Knicks in the Garden tomorrow.
