Daniel Faalele Is A “Big” Deal

Bruce Kluckhohn | Associated Press

There’s big, and then there is Daniel Faalele big. The University of Minnesota right tackle stands at 6 foot 9 and 380 pounds. Yes, you are reading this correctly. You don’t need a new prescription. Or maybe you do, that’s not for me to say. Anyway, the big guy is a really interesting story. What if I were to tell you that Daniel Faalele only played one year of organized football before coming to Minnesota? Some of you might be wondering what the heck was this guy doing if he wasn’t playing football? Those answers will probably surprise you.

Where Did This Giant Man Come From?

Daniel Faalele is from Australia and he never played football when he lived in the country. Instead, he played rugby and basketball. Taking a charge from this guy could probably put you in the hospital. His one year of organized football came at IMG Academy where he got some attention. A 6 foot 9 lineman who can just pile drive people into the ground – who wouldn’t want him? He ultimately signed with Minnesota and has become a fan favorite. In the bowl game against West Virginia, the Golden Gophers first touchdown came from Faalele lining up as a fullback and crashing into the endzone. Good luck stopping him.

NFL Prospect

Daniel Faalele has accepted an invite to the senior bowl and will officially enter the draft. Obviously, his size makes his draft stock go way up. But, sometimes if affects his mobility. He might be one of those cases where he is an NFL guard as opposed to a tackle. Whoever gets Faalele is getting a huge player with great strength and blocking ability. Any team in desperate need of stability on the right side of the line could look to add him in the first or early second round.
