Now it’s official, Matt Nagy has been let go as the coach of the Chicago Bears, per Ian Rapoport.

Nagy’s tenure by the numbers

Matt Nagy coached the Bears for four seasons. He was named Coach of the Year in 2018, and led the Bears to a 12-4 record and a playoff appearance. He made the playoffs in two of his four years as head coach, but finished 0-2 in playoff games. Overall, Nagy was 34-31 as head coach of the Bears.

What went wrong?

Nagy had such a good start with the Bears, but most would highlight the lack of development by Mitchell Trubisky as a big reason why it didn’t work out. Nagy was known from his days in Kansas City to be a bright offensive mind, and one who could take QB talent and really mold it into greatness. Instead, as Trubisky sputtered, so too did the Bears. With a mix of Justin Fields, Andy Dalton, and Nick Foles this year, the Bears could only get to a 6-11 record.

Where do the Bears go from here?

Well, the Bears have also let go Ryan Pace, so they have quite a couple of big roles to fill. For their next head coach, my assumption is that they’ll look to be more offensive-minded again. This Bears’ defense is legitimate, and they will need someone who can work well with Fields.

They will also need a coach the players can get behind. Recently, S Eddie Jackson voiced his feelings about playing for Nagy. The players loved going to work for him. The Bears’ brass will need to find someone who can really win the players’ room when they come in.

Stay tuned

I have been looking into potential candidates for the Bears to hire. Later this week, I will outline some of my opinions on them, and have some fun speculating on the Bears’ coach after Nagy.

Until then, happy NFL playoff season!
